Chapter 7: The Woman Who Carried The Missing Truth
The woman standing in my doorway looked like someone who had spent years running from a nightmare.
Her clothes were simple.
Her hair was shorter than I remembered.
But her eyes…
Her eyes carried the weight of someone who had survived something nobody should survive.
Nobody in the room spoke.
Not Valentina.
Not Marcus.
Not even Lucia.
I stepped forward.
“Who are you?””
The woman looked at Ruby’s picture on the wall behind me.
Then she looked back at me.
“My name is Sofia Bellini.””
The name meant nothing.
Until Lucia gasped.
“No.””
Sofia looked at her.
“Yes.””
Lucia’s face lost all color.
I turned toward her.
“You know her?””
Lucia slowly nodded.
“She was there the night Ruby was born.””
The room became silent again.
That night.
Everyone kept returning to that night.
The night my entire family changed.
I looked at Sofia.
“What happened?””
She took a deep breath.
“Your daughter was never the target because of money.””
I frowned.
“Then why?””
“Because of what she represents.””
I hated answers like that.
Half truths.
Mysteries.
People speaking around the danger instead of naming it.
I stepped closer.
“My daughter is three years old. She represents a family. Nothing more.””
Sofia shook her head.
“That is what everyone wanted you to believe.””
Marcus moved forward.
“Sofia, this is not the place.””
I turned immediately.
“You know her too.””
Marcus stopped.
Another secret.
Another hidden piece.
“How many people have been protecting me from the truth?””
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I looked at Sofia.
“Start from the beginning.””
She nodded.
“When Ruby was born, your family’s old legal documents were being changed.””
I looked at Marcus.
“Because of her inheritance?””
Sofia shook her head.
“No.””
She looked at Ruby’s sleeping picture on the wall.
“Because Ruby was the only person who could expose what happened before she was born.””
The room froze.
I felt anger rise.
“What are you saying?””
Sofia looked directly at Valentina.
“I am saying your wife was not the first person who tried to remove Ruby.””
Valentina’s eyes widened.
“What?””
Sofia continued.
“Someone started the plan years ago.””
I looked around.
“Who?””
Before Sofia answered, the front door opened.
A guard rushed in.
“Boss.””
I turned.
“What?””
He looked nervous.
“We found something in the storage room.””
My stomach tightened.
The storage room.
The place where Valentina wanted my daughter to sleep.
“What did you find?””
The guard handed me a small box.
I opened it.
Inside were documents.
Not official papers.
Personal notes.
Names.
Dates.
Plans.
My eyes moved across the pages.
And then I saw something that made my hand freeze.
Ruby’s name.
Repeated over and over.
I looked at Marcus.
“What is this?””
He stared at the papers.
Then slowly closed his eyes.
“I was hoping you would never see that.””
The room changed.
Because Marcus was no longer denying anything.
“You knew.””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
I threw the papers onto the table.
“You knew someone was planning against my daughter, and you said nothing?””
“I was trying to contain it.””
“By moving her away?””
His silence answered.
I turned toward Valentina.
“And you?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was scared.””
I laughed bitterly.
“You were scared, so you took a three-year-old girl’s room?””
“I thought distance would keep her alive.””
I stared at my wife.
Then at Marcus.
Then at Sofia.
Everyone claimed they were protecting Ruby.
But Ruby was the one person nobody had asked.
I walked upstairs.
Everyone followed.
When I entered Ruby’s room, she was awake.
Her eyes opened when she saw me.
“Daddy?””
I sat beside her.
“I’m here.””
She looked around.
“My toys are coming back?””
I smiled sadly.
“Yes.””
She hugged her rabbit.
“Good.””
That simple word hurt more than anything.
Because she trusted me to fix something adults had broken.
I kissed her forehead.
Then I noticed something.
A small drawing on the floor.
One I had not seen before.
Ruby had drawn our family.
Me.
Her.
Lucia.
And another person.
I picked it up.
“Ruby, who is this?””
She pointed.
“Grandpa.””
I froze.
“Grandpa?””
She nodded.
“He came to my room.””
Everyone behind me became silent.
I turned slowly.
“Who?””
Ruby looked confused.
“The man who told me not to tell Daddy.””
My blood ran cold.
“What man?””
She pointed toward the drawing.
At the figure she had made.
May you like
Then she whispered:
“He said Mommy was bad.””
