Chapter 10: The Name Hidden In The Envelope
I stared at the name written on the page.
For several seconds, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Not because I did not recognize the name.
Because I did.
And that made it worse.
The person behind the plan was not a stranger.
Not an enemy.
Not someone waiting outside the gates.
It was someone who had sat at my table.
Someone who had watched Ruby grow.
Someone who had smiled while knowing exactly what was happening.
I looked up slowly.
“Explain.””
Marcus stood across from me.
His face looked older than it had a few minutes ago.
“I wanted to tell you.””
I laughed quietly.
“You have said that many times tonight.””
“I know.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Marcus looked at Ruby’s file.
“Because the truth would have destroyed the family.””
I slammed the envelope onto the table.
“The family was already being destroyed.””
Nobody spoke.
Valentina looked at me.
For the first time, I saw something different in her eyes.
Not fear.
Regret.
She stepped closer.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
Her tears fell.
“I thought I could fix it before you found out.””
“You removed my daughter’s room.””
“I know.””
“You took her chair.””
“I know.””
“You made her feel unwanted.””
Her voice broke.
“I know.””
The pain in her face was real.
But real regret did not erase real damage.
I turned back to Marcus.
“What is the name?””
He looked at me.
“You need to hear the entire story first.””
“No.””
My voice echoed through the archive.
“I have spent years hearing pieces of the truth.””
I pointed at the file.
“My daughter’s life was changed while everyone around me whispered.””
I stepped closer.
“Tonight, nobody whispers anymore.””
Marcus finally nodded.
“The name belongs to someone who worked with your father.””
“Who?””
He looked at the page.
“Adrian Moretti.””
The name immediately created tension.
Everyone in the room knew it.
Adrian Moretti.
A businessman.
A former ally.
A man who disappeared after my father’s death.
I frowned.
“He died.””
Marcus shook his head.
“No.””
The room became silent.
I looked at him.
“What?””
“Your father wanted everyone to believe Adrian was gone.””
“Why?””
“Because Adrian was connected to Ruby’s birth.””
I looked at Lucia.
She lowered her eyes.
I felt anger rising again.
“How many people knew?””
Lucia answered softly.
“Too many.””
I turned toward her.
“And you?””
She looked ashamed.
“I knew pieces.””
“Everyone knew pieces.””
My voice became quieter.
“And I knew nothing.””
That hurt more than betrayal.
Not because people had secrets.
Because they had made me a stranger in my own family.
A noise suddenly came from upstairs.
A small cry.
Ruby.
I immediately left the archive.
No matter what secrets waited downstairs, my daughter came first.
When I reached her room, Ruby was sitting on her bed.
Anna stood beside her.
“What happened?””
Ruby looked at me.
“Daddy.””
I walked closer.
“What is it?””
She pointed toward her window.
“The man came back.””
My entire body went still.
“What man?””
She pointed outside.
“The grandpa man.””
Security immediately moved.
I looked through the window.
Nothing.
Only the dark garden.
But Ruby’s fear was real.
I knelt.
“Did he say anything?””
She nodded.
“He said I should not trust everyone.””
My heart tightened.
“Who?””
She looked at me.
Then whispered:
“He said Mommy was trying to take my family away.””
I closed my eyes.
Because someone was still playing games with a child.
I stood.
“Find him.””
The guards moved immediately.
Then my phone rang.
A private line.
Only family members had that number.
I answered.
No one spoke.
Then a voice came through.
An older man.
Calm.
Confident.
“You finally opened the file.””
I froze.
“Who is this?””
A quiet laugh.
“You know exactly who.””
I looked around the room.
Everyone watched me.
The voice continued.
“You have spent years believing you were protecting Ruby.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Where are you?””
“I am somewhere you should have checked a long time ago.””
The call ended.
I stared at the screen.
Then the security chief rushed in.
His face was pale.
“Boss.””
“What?””
“We found someone inside the east wing.””
My heart stopped.
“Who?””
The guard swallowed.
“An old man.””
I walked downstairs.

And when I entered the hallway…
I saw the face of the man everyone claimed was dead.
