Chapter 12: The Letter That Changed Everything
I stood beside Ruby’s bed staring at the envelope.
Nobody touched it.
Nobody breathed.
Because everyone understood what it meant.
Someone had entered my daughter’s room.
Someone had gotten past security.
Someone wanted me to find this.
I picked it up carefully.
My father watched from the doorway.
“You need to read it.””
I looked at him.
“You know what it says?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why did you let me find it?””
His eyes became heavy.
“Because I was tired of protecting a lie.””
I opened the envelope.
Inside was a letter.
No signature.
Only one sentence at the top.
*You always believed you controlled this family. You never noticed who controlled you.*
I kept reading.
The letter described things only someone close to us could know.
Private conversations.
Family decisions.
Moments nobody outside the house should have known.
My hands tightened.
“This was written by someone inside.””
Marcus nodded.
“Yes.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
He looked away.
That made my anger return.
“Enough.””
Marcus finally spoke.
“Because the person who wrote it is the reason your father disappeared.””
The room froze.
I looked at Alessandro.
“You knew?””
He nodded.
“I discovered the truth too late.””
I looked back at the letter.
The final paragraph caught my attention.
It mentioned Ruby.
It mentioned the chair.
The room.
The suitcases.
Everything that happened tonight.
But it had been written before the banquet started.
Before Ruby fell.
Before I came home.
Meaning someone had planned every step.
Someone knew exactly how I would react.
I lowered the letter.
“They wanted me angry.””
Nobody spoke.
“They wanted me to blame Valentina.””
Valentina looked shocked.
“They wanted me to blame Marcus.””
Marcus looked down.
“And while everyone was fighting…”
I looked at Ruby.
“They were watching.””
Lucia covered her mouth.
“Domenico…”
I turned.
“Who benefits if this family breaks apart?””
Nobody answered.
Then Ethan stepped into the doorway.
Everyone froze.
He had been listening.
“I know.””
Valentina immediately moved toward him.
“Ethan, go back upstairs.””
But he shook his head.
“No.””
The boy looked at me.
“I heard Grandma talking.””
My heart stopped.
“Grandma?””
Everyone looked confused.
Ethan pointed toward the hallway.
“She said Ruby had to leave before Grandpa came back.””
The room went silent.
I slowly looked at my father.
“Grandma?””
My father’s face changed.
Because there was only one person Ethan could mean.
A person everyone thought was gone.
My mother.
I whispered:
“My mother died years ago.””
Ethan shook his head.
“No.””
He looked frightened.
“She came to the house.””
The air disappeared from the room.
My father closed his eyes.
“No…”
I turned toward him.
“What?””
His voice was barely audible.
“Your mother was never dead.””
The world seemed to stop.
Another ghost.
Another lie.
Another person who had been hiding.
I looked at my father.
“You knew?””
He nodded slowly.
“She was the one who started this.””
My heart sank.
“The one who started what?””
My father looked at Ruby.
Then at me.
“The plan to erase her.””
At that moment, every secret finally connected.
The chair.
The packed room.
The changed records.
The fear.
The lies.
They were never random.
They were all part of one plan.
And the person behind it all had been waiting for the perfect moment to return.
Then the front gate alarm sounded.
A guard rushed inside.
“Boss!””
Everyone turned.
“There is a woman at the entrance.””
My father went pale.
I already knew.
Before the guard spoke her name.
“She says she is Ruby’s grandmother.””
And from the doorway came a voice I had not heard in twenty years.
“Domenico.””
May you like
My blood went cold.
“Your father was never the one you should have feared.””
