Chapter 2: The Plan Inside My Own House

I had spent my entire life recognizing enemies.

Enemies carried weapons.

Enemies made threats.

Enemies stood across from you and announced their intentions.

But betrayal inside a family was different.

It smiled at you.

It shared your dinner table.

It called you husband.

The night of my birthday banquet, I stood in my daughter’s empty room and realized the people closest to me had been quietly removing her from my life.

Ruby sat in my arms.

She was exhausted from crying.

Her small head rested against my chest while I looked at Valentina.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Valentina sighed.

“Domenico, you are overreacting.””

I looked at her.

“Where are Ruby’s things?””

“She has too many things.””

“That was not my question.””

Her expression tightened.

“She needs discipline.””

I looked at Marcus.

“And you agreed with this?””

Marcus crossed his arms.

“Boss, this household needs order.””

I almost laughed.

Order.

That was the word people used when they wanted to hide cruelty.

I had seen it before.

Powerful people rarely admitted what they were doing.

They dressed their choices in nicer words.

A punishment became a lesson.

A betrayal became a necessity.

A cruel decision became something they claimed was for the greater good.

I lowered Ruby into my chair in the hallway.

Then I knelt in front of her.

“Sweetheart, can you wait here with Anna?””

Our housekeeper immediately stepped forward.

Ruby nodded.

But before she let go of my hand, she whispered:

“Daddy, I didn’t do anything bad.””

My heart broke.

I touched her cheek.

“I know.””

She walked away slowly.

Then I turned back.

“You made my daughter believe she was being punished.””

Valentina looked away.

“Because she has been acting differently.””

“She is three.””

“She throws tantrums.””

“She cries because she misses her father.””

Silence.

A few guests downstairs pretended not to listen.

Everyone was listening.

Valentina lowered her voice.

“You are always choosing Ruby over Ethan.””

There it was.

The real problem.

Not the chair.

Not the room.

Jealousy.

I stared at her.

“Ruby is my daughter.””

“And Ethan is your family too.””

“He is.””

“Then why does Ruby get everything?””

I looked at Marcus.

“Did you help her pack Ruby’s room?””

Marcus did not answer immediately.

That pause told me everything.

I stepped closer.

“You did.””

He finally spoke.

“Valentina asked for help.””

“And you agreed.””

“I believed it was the right thing.””

I looked around my own house.

The house where my daughter had taken her first steps.

The house where Ruby had run into my arms after every nightmare.

The house where she had a bedroom decorated with stars because she told me she wanted to sleep under the sky.

And these people had packed it into boxes.

“Who else knew?””

Neither answered.

That was worse.

Because silence in my world was never empty.

It meant someone was hiding something.

I returned downstairs with Ruby in my arms.

The banquet was still frozen.

The guests watched as I walked to the center of the room.

“My daughter’s belongings were removed from her room.””

Whispers spread.

Valentina followed me.

“Domenico, stop embarrassing me.””

I turned.

“You embarrassed yourself.””

The room went silent again.

For years, people had feared my anger.

But tonight, they saw something else.

They saw a father.

I looked at everyone.

“No child in this family will be treated like they are unwanted.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Boss, emotions are clouding your judgment.””

I faced him.

“My judgment is the reason you have survived this long.””

His jaw tightened.

Then he said something that changed the entire atmosphere.

“You should ask yourself why Valentina had to do this without you.””

I narrowed my eyes.

“What does that mean?””

Marcus glanced at Valentina.

She looked nervous.

For the first time that night, truly nervous.

I took one step forward.

“Answer me.””

Valentina looked away.

Marcus spoke quietly.

“There are things about Ruby’s place in this family that you don’t know.””

The room became colder.

I stared at him.

“What things?””

He opened his mouth.

Then stopped.

Because suddenly, the main doors of the banquet hall opened.

An old family accountant stood there holding a folder.

His face was pale.

“Boss…”

Everyone turned.

The accountant looked at Valentina.

Then at Marcus.

Then back at me.

“I found something hidden in the household records.””

My grip tightened.

“What?””

He swallowed.

“It concerns Ruby.””

The room held its breath.

“What did you find?””

The accountant looked down.

May you like

And his next words changed everything.

“Someone has been preparing documents to remove Ruby from the Falcone family inheritance.””
