Chapter 3: The Secret Behind Ruby’s Name
The room did not explode.
There were no screams.
No dramatic accusations.
Just silence.
The kind of silence that comes before a storm.
I looked at the accountant.
“Say that again.””
His hands shook slightly.
“I found records showing changes being prepared regarding Ruby’s position in the family.””
Valentina immediately stepped forward.
“That is not what it means.””
I looked at her.
“Then explain what it means.””
She stopped.
Because she had no answer.
Marcus moved toward the accountant.
“You are misunderstanding private family matters.””
I turned my eyes toward him.
“Did I ask you?””
He became quiet.
That was the first time I had seen Marcus lose control.
And that worried me more than anger.
Because Marcus was not a man who panicked easily.
I walked toward the accountant.
“Who requested these changes?””
He hesitated.
Then looked at Valentina.
Nobody needed him to say the name.
The room already knew.
Valentina’s face changed.
“Domenico, listen to me.””
I looked at my wife.
The woman I married.
The woman who held my daughter after she was born.
The woman who once cried when Ruby called her “Mama.””
“Why?””
Her eyes became wet.
But I could not tell if it was guilt or fear.
“You don’t understand.””
“Then help me understand.””
She looked around.
At the guests.
At Marcus.
At the family watching.
Then she lowered her voice.
“I was trying to protect Ethan.””
The words hit harder than any insult.
I stared at her.
“From Ruby?””
“No.””
“Then from what?””
Valentina took a breath.
“From what happens when you are gone.””
The room became still.
I stepped closer.
“I am not gone.””
“But you could be.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in our world understood the danger of that sentence.
Valentina continued.
“You built an empire where enemies wait for weakness. Ruby is your only biological heir from your first marriage. People will use her.””
I looked at Ruby.
She was sitting beside Anna, holding her stuffed rabbit.
She did not understand the conversation.
She only knew adults were upset.
“You thought removing her would protect her?””
Valentina’s voice softened.
“I thought creating distance would keep her safe.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Because none of this looked like protection.
A child’s chair was taken.
A child’s room was packed.
A child was told she belonged somewhere else.
That was not protection.
That was rejection.
Marcus stepped forward.
“Boss, you need to see the bigger picture.””
I turned.
“And you need to remember who you work for.””
His expression hardened.
“I have protected this family for twenty years.””
“And tonight you protected a plan against my daughter.””
Marcus said nothing.
I walked toward Ruby.
She immediately reached for me.
I lifted her into my arms.
“Daddy?””
“Yes, sweetheart?””
“Can I have my room back?””
The question was so innocent that even the people who had planned this looked away.
I kissed her forehead.
“Yes.””
Then I looked at Valentina.
“And you are going to explain every single thing.””
That was when she broke.
Not crying.
Not apologizing.
Breaking.
Because she realized the plan she created quietly had become public.
She looked toward the staircase.
“There is something else.””
I froze.
“What?””
She whispered:
“Ruby’s room was not the only thing we changed.””
My eyes narrowed.
“What else?””
She looked at Marcus.
And Marcus looked away.
That told me enough.
I carried Ruby downstairs and placed her beside the family table.
Then I walked back toward them.
“Start talking.””
Valentina’s hands trembled.
“Three months ago…”
She stopped.
“Three months ago what?””
Her voice dropped.
“We received information about Ruby’s mother.””
The room changed instantly.
Because Ruby’s mother was a subject nobody discussed.
Not because it was forbidden.
Because it was painful.
My first wife had died when Ruby was still a baby.
Valentina looked at me.
“Someone contacted us.””
“Who?””
She swallowed.
“Someone claiming to know the truth about Ruby’s birth.””
My expression hardened.
“What truth?””
Before she could answer, the lights in the banquet hall flickered.
Everyone turned.
The security team moved toward the entrance.
Then my personal guard rushed inside.
“Boss.””
His face was serious.
“There is someone outside asking to see you.””
“Who?””
He hesitated.
Then he said a name I had not heard in three years.
A name that should have been impossible.
“Lucia Falcone.””
My blood went cold.
May you like
Because Lucia was Ruby’s mother.
And everyone in that room believed she was dead.
