Chapter 14: The Last Betrayal
I waited for Marcus to deny it.
I needed him to.
Because no matter how many secrets had been revealed that night, some part of me still believed Marcus was different.
He was the man who stood beside me when my father died.
The man who protected me when enemies surrounded us.
The man I trusted with my life.
But trust was dangerous when it was built on incomplete truth.
“Marcus.””
My voice was quiet.
“Tell me.””
He looked down.
That was all I needed.
I closed my eyes for a moment.
The pain was not anger anymore.
It was disappointment.
“You helped her.””
Marcus finally spoke.
“Yes.””
Nobody moved.
Valentina looked shocked.
Lucia looked heartbroken.
Even my father looked surprised.
I stared at him.
“Why?””
Marcus swallowed.
“Because your mother convinced me Ruby was in danger.””
“You believed her?””
“At first.””
“At first?””
He nodded.
“I believed removing Ruby temporarily would protect her.””
I shook my head.
“You all keep saying that.””
My voice cracked.
“Do you understand what you did?””
Marcus looked toward Ruby.
“I know.””
“No.””
I stepped closer.
“You do not.””
I pointed toward my daughter.
“She looked at me tonight and asked if she was leaving.””
Marcus closed his eyes.
“And I will regret that forever.””
The room became quiet.
Because regret was not enough.
But at least it was honest.
My mother interrupted.
“Do not pretend he is innocent.””
I turned toward her.
“You manipulated him.””
She smiled.
“I showed him reality.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You showed him fear.””
My father stepped forward.
“This ends now.””
My mother looked at him.
“You always were weak when it came to family.””
My father looked at Ruby.
“No.””
His voice became firm.
“I was weak when I allowed fear to become more important than love.””
That was the first time I heard my father admit he was wrong.
And somehow, that mattered.
The next morning, I called every member of the Falcone family to the estate.
Not for a meeting.
For a decision.
Ruby sat beside me.
Her chair.
The same chair everyone had fought over.
I made sure it was placed beside mine.
I looked at everyone gathered.
“For years, this family believed protecting power mattered more than protecting people.””
Nobody spoke.
“That ends today.””
I looked at Valentina.
She stepped forward.
“I know I hurt Ruby.””
Ruby looked at her.
Valentina knelt.
“I was wrong.””
The apology was not perfect.
It did not erase anything.
But it was the first honest thing she had given my daughter.
Ruby looked at her.
Then slowly nodded.
Children were sometimes kinder than adults deserved.
I looked at Marcus.
“You will answer for what happened.””
He nodded.
“I understand.””
My mother remained silent.
Unlike everyone else, she showed no regret.
Only frustration.
“You will destroy everything your father built.””
I looked at her.
“No.””
I held Ruby’s hand.
“I am rebuilding it.””
She stared at me.
“You think love will make you stronger?””
I answered:
“No.””
I looked at my daughter.
“Love reminds me why strength matters.””
For the first time, my mother had no response.
Later that evening, I returned to Ruby’s room.
Everything had been restored.
Her toys.
Her blankets.
Her drawings.
Her little world.
She looked around.
“Daddy?””
“Yes?””
“Am I staying?””
I sat beside her.
“Yes.””
“Forever?””
I smiled.
“Forever.””
She hugged me.
And for the first time in weeks, I felt peace.
But peace did not last long.
Because when I walked downstairs, my father was waiting.
He held one final document.
Something he had hidden from everyone.
“I thought it was destroyed.””
I looked at it.
“What is it?””
He handed it to me.
“The real reason Ruby was targeted.””
I opened the document.
And my heart stopped.
Because it revealed something nobody knew.
May you like
Ruby was not only the heir to the Falcone family.
She was the person who could expose the truth behind my entire empire.
