Chapter 11: The Father I Buried Twice

The man standing in the hallway looked exactly like the ghost from my memories.

Older.

Weaker.

But alive.

My father.

Alessandro Falcone.

The man whose funeral I attended.

The man whose name had been carved into stone.

The man I believed I had lost forever.

Nobody moved.

Not even the guards.

Because sometimes reality becomes too impossible to react to.

My father looked at me.

“Domenico.””

I could not answer.

My entire life had been built around his death.

The decisions I made.

The power I gained.

The walls I created.

All because I believed I had inherited a world without him.

But he was standing in front of me.

Alive.

I finally spoke.

“How?””

His expression was tired.

“Not tonight.””

I laughed.

A painful laugh.

“Not tonight?””

I stepped closer.

“You disappeared.””

“Yes.””

“You let me bury you.””

“Yes.””

“You let me believe I lost my father.””

His eyes lowered.

“I did what I thought was necessary.””

I looked around.

At everyone.

At my family.

At all the secrets.

“No.””

My voice became cold.

“You did what you thought was necessary.””

The difference mattered.

Because everyone had used those words tonight.

Protection.

Necessity.

Family.

And every time, Ruby suffered.

My father looked upstairs.

“Where is she?””

I immediately stepped between him and the stairs.

“You do not get to ask about her.””

His expression changed.

Pain.

Real pain.

“I never wanted this for her.””

“Then why did it happen?””

He looked at Valentina.

Then Marcus.

Then Lucia.

“I left instructions.””

I turned.

“What instructions?””

Marcus answered.

“Your father wanted Ruby removed from the center of the family temporarily.””

I stared at him.

“Temporarily?””

“Yes.””

My father stepped forward.

“Because Adrian Moretti was preparing to take control.””

I looked at him.

“And you thought making my daughter feel unwanted would stop him?””

My father was silent.

That silence was enough.

I shook my head.

“You all failed her.””

Nobody argued.

Because they knew.

My father looked at me.

“You think I do not know what I did?””

His voice became softer.

“I have regretted every day away from her.””

I looked at him.

“Then why come back now?””

He reached into his coat.

He removed a small box.

Not a weapon.

Not a threat.

A memory.

He opened it.

Inside was a tiny bracelet.

Ruby’s baby bracelet from the hospital.

My breathing stopped.

“I kept this because I knew one day I would have to explain.””

I looked at the bracelet.

The same one I thought was lost.

My father continued.

“Domenico, Ruby was never the danger.””

“Then who was?””

He looked at the people around me.

Then said:

“The danger was the person who convinced everyone Ruby needed to disappear.””

I looked at Valentina.

Then Marcus.

Then Lucia.

My father shook his head.

“No.””

My heart tightened.

“Then who?””

He looked directly at me.

“The person who has been guiding every decision.””

The hallway went silent.

My father whispered:

“The person who knew exactly how to make you distrust everyone else.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Name them.””

He hesitated.

Then said:

“Your daughter’s real enemy is someone you invited into this family yourself.””

I looked around.

Everyone looked afraid.

Then Ruby’s scream came from upstairs.

“Daddy!””

I ran.

Everyone followed.

When I entered her room, the window was open.

The curtains moved in the wind.

And on Ruby’s bed was a single envelope.

My name was written on it.

May you like

Not Ruby’s.

Mine.
