Chapter 5: The Truth Hidden Before Ruby Was Born

I had spent years believing I knew every secret inside my family.

I was wrong.

The most dangerous secrets were never hidden outside the walls.

They were hidden by the people who lived inside them.

I held the photograph in my hand.

Marcus stood across from me.

The man who had protected my family.

The man who had saved my life more than once.

The man I trusted enough to stand beside my daughter.

And now there was a picture of him holding Ruby as a baby.

“Explain.””

Marcus looked at Lucia.

Then at Valentina.

Neither spoke.

That silence made my patience disappear.

“Explain.””

Marcus finally took a breath.

“I was there the night Ruby was born.””

I stared at him.

“Everyone was.””

“No.””

His voice became quieter.

“I was there after.””

The room felt colder.

I stepped closer.

“After what?””

Marcus looked down.

“After the attack.””

I remembered that night.

The accident.

The hospital.

The chaos.

The fear.

Lucia had nearly died.

Ruby had been only hours old.

I had been told everything was under control.

Apparently, it was not.

“What are you saying?””

Marcus looked at Lucia.

“She asked me to hide the truth.””

Lucia closed her eyes.

“I had no choice.””

My anger turned toward her.

“No choice?””

She nodded.

“Someone was trying to take Ruby.””

The words stopped me.

“Who?””

Lucia looked toward Valentina.

And Valentina immediately shook her head.

“Do not do this.””

Lucia’s eyes filled with pain.

“You know what happened.””

I looked between them.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

Then Ruby’s voice came from the staircase.

“Daddy?””

Everyone froze.

I turned.

She stood there holding her stuffed rabbit.

Anna looked behind her apologetically.

“She heard voices.””

I immediately walked toward Ruby.

I picked her up.

“It’s okay.””

She looked around.

“Is Mommy real?””

The question destroyed the room.

Lucia covered her mouth.

Because hearing her daughter call her that after three years was something she never expected.

I looked at Lucia.

Then at Ruby.

“Sweetheart…”

Ruby reached toward Lucia.

“Mommy?””

Lucia broke down.

She walked closer slowly.

“Ruby.””

The little girl touched her face.

“You look like my pictures.””

Nobody spoke.

Because sometimes a child could forgive faster than adults.

I watched my daughter meet the mother she thought she lost.

And for the first time that night, my anger became something else.

Confusion.

Because everyone had been protecting someone.

But nobody had been honest with me.

Later, after Ruby fell asleep upstairs, I returned to the office.

Lucia sat across from me.

Valentina stood near the window.

Marcus remained by the door.

I looked at all three of them.

“One person talks.””

Nobody moved.

“Now.””

Lucia spoke first.

“Three years ago, after Ruby was born, we discovered someone inside the organization was planning to use her identity.””

I frowned.

“Her identity?””

Lucia nodded.

“Ruby was born with rights connected to the Falcone family.””

“I know that.””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“You know the public version.””

I felt my hands tighten.

“What is the real version?””

Lucia looked down.

“Ruby’s birth certificate was changed.””

The room went silent.

I looked at Valentina.

Then Marcus.

“Who changed it?””

Lucia whispered:

“Marcus.””

My eyes moved slowly toward him.

Marcus did not deny it.

That hurt more than the accusation.

“Why?””

Marcus stepped forward.

“Because I was trying to protect her.””

I laughed once.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was unbelievable.

“You protected her by changing her records?””

“I protected her from someone who wanted control over her.””

“Who?””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he said:

“Your own father’s old allies.””

The name meant nothing.

Until Lucia continued.

“The same people who tried to kill me.””

I stared at them.

The room suddenly felt smaller.

All these years.

I thought I had lost Lucia.

I thought I had protected Ruby.

But someone had been fighting a secret war around my daughter.

And while I was building my empire…

Someone was rewriting my family’s future.

I looked at Marcus.

“Then why did you help Valentina remove Ruby from this house?””

His face changed.

For the first time, he looked ashamed.

“Because I believed…”

He stopped.

“Believed what?””

Marcus looked at me.

“That Ruby was no longer safe here.””

I stepped closer.

“You thought sending my daughter to a storage room would save her?””

“No.””

“Then what?””

Marcus lowered his voice.

“Because someone inside this house is still trying to find her.””

A chill ran through me.

“Who?””

May you like

Marcus looked toward the door.

And before he answered, every light in the mansion went out.
