Chapter 8: The Hidden Investigation
I didn’t sleep that night.
I sat at my desk surrounded by documents, photographs, and evidence from a life I thought I understood.
Every memory had changed.
Our first date.
Our first vacation.
The day he proposed.
The wedding.
Everything had a shadow behind it.
At sunrise, Michael arrived at my apartment.
He carried a thick folder.
“I brought everything.””
I looked at him.
“Tell me the truth.””
He nodded.
“I will.””
We sat across from each other.
For the first time in years, I saw Michael not as my accountant.
But as someone who was afraid for me.
“Your father wasn’t involved in financial crimes.””
“Then why did Julian believe he was?””
“Because Victor manipulated him.””
Michael opened the folder.
“Seven years ago, Victor convinced several people that your father had stolen company money.””
“But he didn’t.””
“No.””
“How do you know?””
“Because your father hired investigators before he died.””
He handed me a document.
The first page contained my father’s notes.
I recognized his handwriting.
*Victor is planning something. Julian may be involved.*
My stomach twisted.
“Julian?””
Michael nodded.
“Your father suspected him.””
I kept reading.
There were dates.
Meetings.
Financial records.
Then I found something strange.
A name.
Not Victor.
Not Julian.
Someone else.
“Who is Daniel Cross?””
Michael looked surprised.
“You know that name?””
“No.””
“He was your father’s private investigator.””
“Was?””
“He disappeared the same week your father died.””
I looked up.
“Another person connected to that night disappeared?””
“Yes.””
I stood.
“This isn’t a coincidence.””
“No.””
My phone buzzed.
A message from Julian.
*Please meet me. Alone.*
I showed Michael.
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
“I need answers.””
“Clara, he’s dangerous.””
I looked at the message.
“I need to know what happened to my father.””
Michael was quiet.
Then he handed me a small recording device.
“If you go, take this.””
I nodded.
Two hours later, I sat across from Julian in a quiet restaurant.
The same restaurant where he proposed.
The irony almost made me smile.
He looked exhausted.
No expensive suit.
No confident attitude.
Just a man who finally realized he couldn’t control the story anymore.
“You came.””
“I want the truth.””
He looked down.
“I know.””
“No more lies.””
He nodded.
“Okay.””
I placed my phone on the table.
Recording.
“Start with my father.””
Julian swallowed.
“I met Thomas Bennett because of Victor.””
“Why?””
“Victor wanted information.””
“About what?””
“Money.””
I stared at him.
“Again?””
Julian leaned forward.
“Clara, your father wasn’t broke when he died.””
I froze.
“What?””
“He hid assets.””
“That’s impossible.””
“No. It’s not.””
He looked at me.
“Your father discovered Victor was stealing from the company. He moved the money somewhere safe.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
His expression changed.
Pain.
Real pain.
“At first? To find it.””
My chest tightened.
“And later?””
He looked away.
“Later, I loved you.””
I laughed softly.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“I know how it sounds.””
“It sounds like I was a target.””
“You were.””
The honesty hurt.
“But you became more than that.””
I looked at him.
“Then why were you stealing my inheritance?””
His face changed.
“What?””
I watched him carefully.
“Don’t pretend.””
“Clara, I didn’t authorize that transfer.””
“You expect me to believe Sienna acted alone?””
His jaw tightened.
“Sienna lied to me too.””
That surprised me.
“What?””
“She told me she only wanted access to business records.””
“And you believed her?””
“I was wrong.””
For the first time, Julian looked genuinely afraid.
“Clara, you need to leave.””
“What?””
“Sienna isn’t working with me anymore.””
I stared at him.
“Then who is she working with?””
Julian looked toward the window.
And whispered:
“Someone who has been controlling both of us.””
Before I could ask another question, Julian’s phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His face turned pale.
“What?””
He answered.
A woman’s voice came through.
Sienna.
But she wasn’t crying.
She wasn’t angry.
She sounded calm.
“Julian, you should have never told her.””
He stood up.
“Sienna, where are you?””
She laughed.
“Somewhere Clara will never find.””
Then the call ended.
Julian looked at me.
May you like
And whispered:
“She knows about the file.””
