Chapter 6: The Man Who Knew My Name
I read the letter again.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
*If Clara ever discovers the truth, she must never trust the man wearing the ring.*
My fingers touched my wedding band.
A symbol that was supposed to mean love.
Commitment.
Forever.
Now it felt like evidence.
Evelyn watched me carefully.
“Your father knew.””
I looked up.
“Knew what?””
“That someone would come after you.””
I shook my head.
“My father never mentioned anything.””
“Because he was trying to protect you.””
“By saying nothing?””
“Sometimes silence is the only protection people have left.””
I hated that part of me understood.
My father had always been protective.
After losing my mother, he became even more careful.
He checked every contract.
Every business partner.
Every person who entered our lives.
Except Julian.
Or maybe he did.
Maybe he saw something I didn’t.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice responded.
“Clara.””
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Not because I heard it often.
Because I had heard it in old family recordings.
Victor Hayes.
My hand went cold.
“Where did you get my number?””
He laughed softly.
“Your husband gave it to me.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She immediately understood.
“Clara, hang up.””
But I didn’t.
I needed answers.
“Why are you calling me?””
“Because you’re asking questions you shouldn’t.””
“Did you use Julian?””
Silence.
Then:
“Julian made his own choices.””
The answer told me everything.
“You knew about me before he met me.””
“Yes.””
My heart pounded.
“How?””
“Your father talked too much.””
I tightened my grip.
“My father trusted you.””
“And he was wrong.””
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“He trusted the wrong person.””
Victor laughed.
“You sound like him.””
“I’ll take that as a compliment.””
His tone changed.
“Clara, you have no idea what you’re involved in.””
“Then explain.””
“No.””
“Why?””
“Because once you know the truth, there’s no going back.””
I looked at the documents on the table.
“My life was already destroyed.””
A pause.
Then Victor said:
“Ask Julian about the night your father died.””
My entire body froze.
“What?””
But the line went dead.
I stared at my phone.
The night my father died.
The night everyone told me was an accident.
A car crash on a rainy highway.
A tragedy.
Nothing more.
I turned to Evelyn.
“Was Julian there?””
She looked terrified.
“Clara…”
“Was Julian there?””
She slowly nodded.
“Yes.””
The room spun.
“No.””
“I’m sorry.””
“No.””
I stepped back.
“That’s impossible.””
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“Your husband has been hiding things from you since the day you met him.””
My phone buzzed.
Another message.
This time from Michael.
*Clara, I found the missing investigation file.*
I opened it immediately.
There was a scanned document.
A report.
The title made my heart stop.
*Vehicle Incident Investigation — Thomas Bennett Death*
My father.
I scrolled down.
Names appeared.
Witnesses.
Evidence.
Then one line caught my attention.
*Person of interest interviewed: Julian Bennett.*
I stopped.
Julian.
My husband.
Before he was my husband.
Before we even met.
I looked at Evelyn.
“Why was Julian questioned about my father’s death?””
She didn’t answer.
Because she knew.
And deep down, I knew too.
Then another message appeared from Michael.
*Clara, there’s a video file attached.*
I opened it.
The screen loaded.
A security camera recording.
A parking lot.
A man walking toward my father’s car.
The quality was blurry.
But the face was visible enough.
I leaned closer.
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Because the man standing beside my father’s vehicle seven years ago…
Was Julian.
