Chapter 11: The Room My Father Hid

The old Bennett building looked abandoned.

The windows were covered in dust.

The sign outside had faded.

Anyone passing by would have assumed it was empty.

But Daniel unlocked the door like he had done it yesterday.

Inside, the smell brought back memories.

Old paper.

Wood.

My father’s cologne.

I stopped walking.

For a moment, I was a child again.

Running through these halls.

Waiting for my father to finish work so we could go home.

I touched the reception desk.

“He never left.””

Daniel stood behind me.

“No.””

“Why?””

“Because he knew someone would come back.””

I looked at him.

“Who?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

He led us upstairs.

Julian followed quietly.

Too quietly.

I noticed.

“You’re scared.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

“Of what?””

He looked toward the hallway.

“Of what you’re going to find.””

Daniel stopped at the end of the corridor.

A blank wall stood ahead.

No door.

No sign.

Nothing.

He pressed his hand against a hidden panel.

A click echoed.

A door opened.

I stared.

“My father built a secret room?””

Daniel nodded.

“For emergencies.””

Inside was a small office.

Untouched.

A desk.

A chair.

A bookshelf.

And dozens of files.

My hands trembled.

“This was here the entire time?””

“Yes.””

I walked toward the desk.

There was a photograph.

My father.

My mother.

And a woman standing beside them.

I picked it up.

“Elizabeth.””

Daniel nodded.

“My father’s sister?””

“Yes.””

“Why did nobody tell me?””

“Because Elizabeth disappeared.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“After your mother died.””

The pieces began connecting.

My mother.

My aunt.

My father’s secrets.

“What happened to her?””

Daniel opened a file.

“She found out Victor was stealing money from the company.””

“And?””

“She tried to expose him.””

I looked at Julian.

“Like my father.””

Daniel nodded.

“Exactly.””

I opened another document.

Then I saw it.

A bank transfer.

A huge amount.

But the recipient wasn’t Victor.

It wasn’t Sienna.

It was another account.

A private trust.

With my name.

I froze.

“My father left this for me?””

“Yes.””

“How much?””

Daniel looked serious.

“Enough that Victor would destroy anyone to get it.””

I turned the page.

There was a handwritten note.

My father’s handwriting.

My eyes filled immediately.

*Clara, if you are reading this, I failed to protect you.*

I covered my mouth.

Daniel looked away.

I continued.

*The person who hurt our family will try to convince you they love you. They will make you question yourself. But remember this: people who love you do not need to hide the truth.*

My fingers shook.

The words felt like he was speaking directly to me.

Then I reached the final line.

*Trust the person who brings you this letter. Not the person who brought you pain.*

I looked up.

At Daniel.

Then at Julian.

The silence was unbearable.

Julian stepped forward.

“Clara…”

I held up my hand.

“Don’t.””

His face fell.

Daniel looked at the document again.

“There’s more.””

“What?””

He pointed at the bottom.

A second signature.

Not my father’s.

My eyes narrowed.

“Who signed this?””

Daniel hesitated.

Then answered.

“Julian.””

The room went silent.

I turned slowly.

“Julian?””

His face changed.

“Clara, I can explain.””

“You signed my father’s letter?””

“No.””

“Then why is your name here?””

Julian looked broken.

“Because your father asked me to.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“He knew Victor was using me.””

Daniel nodded.

“Thomas discovered Julian wasn’t working willingly.””

I looked at Julian.

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

Julian looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

“Because you lied.””

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt.

Before I could respond, a noise came from outside.

A door closing.

Daniel immediately turned.

“We’re not alone.””

The lights flickered.

Then a voice echoed from the hallway.

“Looking for answers, Clara?””

I knew that voice.

Sienna.

Daniel moved toward the door.

But Sienna stepped inside first.

May you like

And she wasn’t alone.

Standing behind her was Victor Hayes.
