Chapter 2: The Secret Money Trail

Michael’s voice was different.

I had known him for years.

He was always calm, always professional.

But that night, there was hesitation in every word.

I sat at my kitchen table, staring at the wedding photo sitting beside a half-empty glass of water.

Julian and I were smiling in that picture.

Two people who looked completely certain about their future.

I wondered when the lie started.

“How serious is it, Michael?””

There was a pause.

“Clara, I need you to promise me something.””

“What?””

“Don’t confront Julian until you know everything.””

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“Michael, what did you find?””

He exhaled slowly.

“Transfers.””

My stomach sank.

“How many?””

“Several.””

“From Julian’s company?””

“Yes.””

I looked at the investment documents open on my laptop.

“Where did the money go?””

Another pause.

Then he answered.

“Mostly to private accounts connected to Sienna.””

I closed my eyes.

Even though I already suspected it, hearing it aloud felt different.

“What amount?””

“Almost $180,000.””

The room became silent.

The refrigerator hummed.

Cars passed outside my apartment.

Life continued like nothing had happened.

But my marriage had just cracked open.

“Michael,” I whispered, “are you sure?””

“I wouldn’t call you if I wasn’t.””

I opened the file he had sent me.

There were dates.

Amounts.

Account numbers.

And one thing that made my blood run cold.

“Clara,” Michael said carefully, “there’s something else.””

“What?””

“The company documents.””

I clicked another attachment.

A registration form appeared.

The business owner information loaded.

And then I saw my name.

Clara Bennett.

Owner.

My heart stopped.

“That’s impossible.””

“I know.””

“I never registered this company.””

“I know.””

“My signature isn’t real.””

Michael was silent.

That silence told me everything.

Someone had used my identity.

Someone had created a company in my name.

Someone close enough to know my personal information.

My wedding ring suddenly felt heavy on my finger.

Because the man who promised to protect me had been stealing from me.

My phone buzzed.

Julian.

I looked at the screen.

Ten missed calls.

Five messages.

I answered.

Immediately, his angry voice filled the room.

“Clara! Finally!””

I said nothing.

“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?””

I almost laughed.

“What I’ve done?””

“Yes! We’re in Hawaii, and the hotel says there’s a problem with the reservation.””

I looked at the clock.

“Really?””

“Stop acting innocent.””

I leaned back.

“Julian, did you use my identity to register Sienna Holdings LLC?””

Silence.

A long silence.

The kind that tells you more than words ever could.

Then he said quietly:

“Where did you hear that?””

My chest tightened.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Fear.

“Answer me.””

“Clara, you don’t understand.””

“No. I understand perfectly.””

In the background, I heard Sienna.

“Julian, just hang up. She’s trying to scare you.””

I turned toward the laptop screen.

“Hi, Sienna.””

The line went quiet.

Then she said:

“You’re being dramatic.””

I smiled.

“Am I?””

“Yes. Julian helped me create a business opportunity. That’s all.””

“Using my information?””

She stopped talking.

Julian immediately interrupted.

“Clara, listen to me.””

“No.””

“Please.””

“No, Julian. You listen.””

I opened another document.

A bank authorization form.

The date was two weeks before our wedding.

My hands started shaking.

Because the amount listed was not $90,000.

It was $400,000.

A transfer from an account connected to my late father’s estate.

The recipient?

Sienna Holdings LLC.

I whispered:

“You were going after my inheritance.””

Julian’s breathing changed.

“Clara…”

“Were you?””

“Please don’t call your lawyer.””

That was all I needed to hear.

I ended the call.

For several minutes, I just sat there.

Then another message arrived from Michael.

One sentence.

“Clara, I found who helped Julian create the account.””

I opened it.

There was a name.

A name I hadn’t heard in seven years.

A name connected to the worst moment of my family’s history.

My father’s former business partner.

The man who disappeared after millions vanished from our company.

And underneath his name was one terrifying detail.

May you like

His daughter’s last name.

Sienna.
