Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

Three days later, Julian woke up.

The bullet missed anything fatal.

The doctors called it a miracle.

I called it complicated.

Because miracles were supposed to bring peace.

This brought more questions.

I stood beside his hospital bed.

For the first time since we met, neither of us pretended.

No fake smiles.

No carefully chosen words.

Just two people surrounded by the consequences of our choices.

“You should hate me.””

Julian said it quietly.

I looked out the window.

“I’m trying.””

He nodded.

“I deserve that.””

Silence.

Then I asked:

“Did you know my mother was alive?””

His face changed.

“No.””

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

I watched him carefully.

The old me would have searched for the lie.

The new me knew people could tell the truth and still destroy you.

“Why did my father trust you?””

Julian looked down.

“Because I told him everything.””

“Everything?””

“I told him Victor recruited me.””

I frowned.

“When?””

“Before I met you.””

He took a breath.

“Victor knew my family was struggling. He offered me money. Information. A way to destroy Thomas Bennett.””

“And you accepted.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled.

“Because I was angry.””

I didn’t interrupt.

“My father died believing Thomas ruined him. I wanted revenge.””

“And then?””

“I met you.””

The room went quiet.

“You changed everything.””

I looked away.

“That doesn’t erase what you did.””

“I know.””

He reached into the drawer beside his bed.

He pulled out a small envelope.

“I found this before the shooting.””

I didn’t take it immediately.

“What is it?””

“Something your mother left.””

I opened it.

Inside was a USB drive.

And a note.

*Clara, this contains the truth about Victor, Elizabeth, and the person who betrayed us all.*

My hands tightened.

“Where did you get this?””

“From Victor.””

I looked at him.

“Why would he give you this?””

“He didn’t.””

Julian looked toward the door.

“Someone else did.””

Before I could ask, the door opened.

A woman walked in.

An older woman.

Gray hair.

Tired eyes.

But there was something familiar about her face.

My heart stopped.

I knew her.

Not from memory.

From photographs.

From stories.

From the face I saw beside my parents.

“Elizabeth.””

The woman froze.

Nobody spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Clara.””

My entire body went numb.

“You’re alive.””

Tears filled her eyes.

“I know.””

I stepped back.

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

My voice broke.

“Everyone who lies to me says they’re protecting me.””

Elizabeth looked devastated.

“I made mistakes.””

“Why?””

She looked at Julian.

Then at the USB drive.

“Because your mother discovered the truth.””

“What truth?””

Elizabeth sat down slowly.

“Your father didn’t hide the money.””

I waited.

“He hid the evidence.””

“Evidence of what?””

She looked directly at me.

“Victor wasn’t trying to steal your family’s fortune.””

“Then what?””

“He was trying to hide that he murdered someone.””

My breath caught.

“Who?””

Elizabeth whispered:

“Your mother.””

The room went silent.

I shook my head.

“No.””

Elizabeth nodded sadly.

“Yes.””

“But my mother disappeared.””

“Because she survived.””

I froze.

“What?””

“She escaped.””

My heart raced.

“Where is she?””

Elizabeth looked down.

“I don’t know.””

The answer broke something inside me.

My mother was alive.

Somewhere.

For years.

And nobody told me.

Then Elizabeth said:

“But there’s one thing you need to know.””

“What?””

“Your mother wasn’t Victor’s victim.””

I stared.

“She was his biggest threat.””

Elizabeth opened her bag.

She removed a final document.

A photograph.

A signature.

A name.

And the person listed as Victor’s secret partner wasn’t Julian.

Wasn’t Sienna.

Wasn’t anyone I expected.

It was someone whose name I had seen my entire life.

The signature at the bottom belonged to:

May you like

*Thomas Bennett.*

My father.
