Chapter 7: The Video That Changed Everything
I watched the video three times.
Then five.
Then ten.
Each time, I hoped I had misunderstood.
Maybe the image was unclear.
Maybe the person wasn’t Julian.
Maybe my mind was forcing pieces together because I was hurt.
But every time the screen replayed, the same truth appeared.
The man standing beside my father’s car was Julian Bennett.
My husband.
The man who kissed my forehead every morning.
The man who held my hand at our wedding.
The man who promised he would never let anyone hurt me.
My hands shook as I closed the laptop.
“No.””
The word escaped before I could stop it.
Evelyn looked at me with sadness.
“You knew there was something wrong.””
I turned toward her.
“I knew he lied.””
My voice cracked.
“I didn’t know he was connected to my father’s death.””
The room felt silent.
Heavy.
Like the walls themselves were waiting for the next thing to break.
My phone rang.
Julian.
I stared at his name glowing on the screen.
For years, seeing his name made me smile.
Now it made me feel sick.
I answered.
“Clara?””
His voice was careful.
Too careful.
“Where are you?””
“Still in Hawaii.””
“Are you alone?””
I almost laughed.
“You’re asking me that?””
A pause.
Then he lowered his voice.
“Who told you?””
The question hit me harder than any confession could have.
Not “What are you talking about?””
Not “That’s impossible.””
Who told you?
He already knew.
I closed my eyes.
“You knew I would find out eventually.””
“Clara, listen to me.””
“No.””
“Please.””
“No, Julian. You have spent years controlling what I know. You decided what truth I deserved.””
“That’s not fair.””
I laughed.
“Fair?””
I looked at the wedding ring on my finger.
“You brought another woman on our honeymoon.””
“Because you’re misunderstanding everything.””
“Then explain.””
Silence.
I waited.
Seconds passed.
Finally, he said:
“I was investigating your father.””
My heart stopped.
“Why?””
“Because I believed he was responsible for what happened to my family.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
“My father lost everything because of Thomas Bennett.””
I felt my anger shift into confusion.
“Your father?””
“Yes.””
The pieces moved.
But they didn’t fit.
“Julian, your father was never involved with mine.””
“You don’t know that.””
“I know my father.””
“You knew the version he wanted you to know.””
The words were cruel.
And for a moment, they sounded like something Victor Hayes would say.
I stood up.
“You married me to investigate my family.””
“I married you because I loved you.””
“Don’t.””
“It started as an investigation.””
My breathing stopped.
“Started?””
Julian was silent.
And that silence was the worst answer.
“So it’s true.””
“Clara—”
“You planned everything.””
“No.””
“You met me because of my father.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt more than another lie.
I walked away from the phone.
“You were never going to tell me.””
“I was going to.””
“When?””
“After I found proof.””
“Proof of what?””
He didn’t answer.
“Julian.””
His voice became quieter.
“Proof that your father destroyed my family.””
I looked at Evelyn.
She shook her head.
“No.””
I ignored her.
“What about Sienna?””
Another silence.
I knew.
“You were working with her.””
“Clara, it’s complicated.””
“Is that what you call betrayal now?””
“She had information.””
“She was sleeping with you.””
“That wasn’t the plan.””
I froze.
Not the denial I expected.
Not outrage.
Just a weak excuse.
“What wasn’t the plan?””
Julian sighed.
“Falling for you.””
For one second, my heart reacted.
The old Clara would have believed him.
The woman who waited for him to come home.
The woman who defended him.
The woman who thought love could fix anything.
But she was gone.
“You don’t get to say that.””
“Clara—”
“You don’t get to destroy my life and then tell me your feelings were real.””
I ended the call.
Immediately, another notification appeared.
A message from Michael.
*I enhanced the video. There’s audio.*
My hands went numb.
Audio.
I opened the file.
The video played again.
Julian stood beside my father’s car.
But this time, I heard voices.
My father’s voice.
Angry.
“You’re making a mistake, Julian.””
Then Julian answered.
“You should have listened when I warned you.””
I stopped breathing.
My father continued.
“You’re just like Victor.””
A pause.
Then Julian said:
“Victor was right about you.””
The video ended.
I stared at the black screen.
Because now I knew.
Julian wasn’t just connected to my father’s death.
He had been there.
And he had a reason.
May you like
Then Michael sent one more message.
*Clara, I found the original police report. The accident wasn’t an accident.*
