Chapter 3: The Man Behind Sienna
Seven years earlier, my father lost everything.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
The newspapers called it a business collapse.
A tragic failure.
But my father always said one thing before he died.
“Clara, someone didn’t take the money from us. Someone took it from me.””
I was twenty-five at the time.
Young enough to believe people were mostly good.
Old enough to know betrayal could destroy a family.
The man responsible was Victor Hayes.
My father’s closest friend.
His business partner.
The person who sat beside us at family dinners.
The person who knew every secret about our company.
Then one morning, he disappeared.
Two million dollars vanished with him.
And now, seven years later, his daughter was sleeping in the honeymoon suite I paid for.
With my husband.
I stared at Michael’s message.
Sienna Hayes.
The name felt impossible.
I called him immediately.
“Michael, are you certain?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“I traced the registration records. Sienna Holdings was created six months ago.””
“Six months?””
“Yes.””
I stood up and walked toward the window.
Six months ago.
That was around the time Julian started acting differently.
Working late.
Protecting his phone.
Suddenly needing privacy.
I remembered every excuse.
Every lie.
Michael continued.
“Clara, there’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
“What now?””
“The company wasn’t just created using your identity.””
My hand froze on the window frame.
“What does that mean?””
“The authorization documents included information only someone close to you would know.””
My heart sank.
“Julian.””
“I believe so.””
I looked around my apartment.
The place where Julian and I built memories.
The couch where we watched movies.
The kitchen where we cooked together.
Everything suddenly felt like a stage.
A performance.
My phone rang again.
Julian.
I answered this time.
His voice was different.
No anger.
No arrogance.
Just fear.
“Clara.””
“What?””
“I need you to listen.””
“I’ve been listening for months.””
“Please. Sienna and I can explain.””
I almost smiled.
“You and Sienna?””
He paused.
“That’s not what you think.””
“Then what is it?””
Silence.
Then he said:
“She needed help.””
I laughed softly.
“So you stole from me to help her?””
“No!””
“Did you fake my signature?””
“Clara—”
“Did you plan to take my father’s money?””
He didn’t answer.
And that answer destroyed whatever was left.
I looked at our wedding picture again.
“Julian, did you ever love me?””
His voice became quiet.
“Of course I did.””
“Then why did you marry me?””
Another pause.
I waited.
But before he could answer, someone spoke in the background.
A woman.
Sienna.
“She knows too much. We need to leave.””
My blood ran cold.
“Julian?””
He quickly lowered his voice.
“Clara, don’t do anything until I get back.””
I almost laughed.
“Get back?””
“Yes.””
“From my honeymoon?””
He said nothing.
Then I heard a knock through the phone.
A hotel employee.
“Mr. Bennett, we need you to come to the front desk immediately.””
Julian panicked.
“Clara, we can talk about this later.””
“No.””
“Please.””
I looked down at the documents on my table.
For the first time since our wedding day, I felt completely clear.
“You’re right, Julian.””
He exhaled.
“You understand?””
“No.””
I smiled.
“I understand exactly what I need to do.””
I ended the call.
Then Michael sent one final attachment.
The original bank application.
I opened it.
The emergency contact section appeared.
The name was not Julian.
It was Victor Hayes.
But below it was another line.
Relationship to applicant:
Father.
I stared at the screen.
Sienna wasn’t just Julian’s secretary.
She wasn’t just the woman he brought on our honeymoon.
She was the daughter of the man who destroyed my family.
And somehow, Julian had walked into my life carrying the same secret.
Then my email notification appeared.
A new message.
From an unknown sender.
