Chapter 9: The Woman Who Knew Too Much

The bedroom door opened.

Vanessa stood there.

Her face was pale.

Her eyes immediately went to the box.

Then to the letter in Mia’s hands.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to find that.””

I felt something inside me break.

Not surprise.

Not anger.

Just exhaustion.

Because even now, she wasn’t saying she was sorry.

She was saying I wasn’t supposed to know.

I stepped forward.

“You hid this.””

Vanessa swallowed.

“Yes.””

Mia looked at her.

“Why?””

Vanessa looked between us.

“Because I was trying to protect you.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone says that.””

She flinched.

“Aaliyah—”

“No.””

I held up the letter.

“You don’t get to use that excuse anymore.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I made mistakes.””

“You made choices.””

The words hit her.

Because they were true.

Mia looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about this letter?””

“Yes.””

My stomach dropped.

“How long?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Years.””

I closed my eyes.

Years.

She had known.

She had lived with me.

Watched me grow up.

Watched me struggle.

Watched me question why my mother wasn’t there.

And she knew.

“Why?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Because your mother asked me to keep it.””

That stopped me.

“What?””

She nodded.

“She came to me before she died.””

I stared.

“My mother trusted you?””

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you betray her?””

Her face collapsed.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at the letter.

“Of what the truth would do.””

I crossed my arms.

“The truth about who my father is?””

Vanessa went silent.

And that silence told me everything.

“You know.””

She looked away.

“Vanessa.””

Her voice broke.

“I know who your biological father is.””

The room became silent.

Mia looked shocked.

“Who?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel.””

I felt the words before I understood them.

No.

My mind rejected it.

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I wish it was.””

I stepped backward.

“My father is David.””

“Yes.””

She looked at me.

“He is your father.””

“But Daniel…”

“Biologically.””

The word felt unreal.

I looked at Mia.

She looked just as shocked.

“Does Dad know?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“He doesn’t.””

“No.””

My chest tightened.

“How could you let him believe something else?””

Vanessa cried.

“Because David loved you.””

“That doesn’t answer my question.””

“No.””

She wiped her tears.

“It doesn’t.””

She walked closer.

“Your mother wanted David to raise you because she knew he would love you as his own.””

I looked at the letter.

“And Daniel?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“Daniel only cared about control.””

“What does that mean?””

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“He didn’t want a daughter.””

The words hurt.

“He wanted proof that he still had power over your mother.””

I looked away.

A stranger had been connected to my life since before I was born.

And I never knew.

Vanessa reached into her coat pocket.

She pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this too.””

I stared.

“Another letter?””

She nodded.

“From Daniel.””

My hands went cold.

“Why do you have it?””

“Because your mother gave it to me.””

“Why?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“Because she knew one day you would need to see what kind of person he really was.””

I took the envelope.

But before I opened it, my phone rang.

Dad.

I answered immediately.

“Aaliyah?””

His voice sounded panicked.

“Where are you?””

“At home.””

A pause.

Then:

“Who is with you?””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Vanessa.””

Silence.

Then Dad whispered:

“Get away from her.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

His voice became urgent.

“Aaliyah, listen to me.””

“Dad, what are you talking about?””

“I found something.””

“What?””

A long pause.

Then he said the words that changed everything again.

“Vanessa wasn’t the only one hiding the truth.””

I gripped the phone.

“What do you mean?””

His voice dropped.

“I found out who changed your birth records.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was already crying.

Dad continued:

“And it wasn’t Daniel.””

The room went silent.

“Then who was it?””

My father took a shaky breath.

“Aaliyah…”

“Who?””

May you like

His answer came quietly.

“It was your mother.””
