Chapter 14: The Person We Never Suspected

The name on the document made my father stand completely still.

I looked at him.

“Who is it?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

His eyes stayed on the screen.

“It can’t be.””

I moved closer.

Then I saw it.

The name.

The signature.

The person who had helped Daniel.

The person who had changed records.

The person who had been moving behind the scenes.

It wasn’t Vanessa.

It wasn’t Mia.

It wasn’t even Daniel.

It was my father’s closest business partner.

A man named Robert.

I had known him my entire life.

He had been at birthday parties.

Family dinners.

Graduations.

He was the man Dad trusted most.

“What does he have to do with this?””

Dad looked devastated.

“Everything.””

I sat down.

“Explain.””

Dad took a deep breath.

“Robert helped me build my company.””

“Okay.””

“He knew our finances. Our legal documents. Everything.””

Mia frowned.

“So he helped Daniel?””

Dad nodded.

“Daniel needed access.””

I looked at the document.

“And Robert gave it to him?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

Dad’s face hardened.

“Money.””

It was always money.

Power.

Control.

The same reasons people destroyed lives.

I looked at the screen.

“But why involve Mom?””

Dad shook his head.

“Because your mother discovered what they were doing.””

“And they tried to silence her?””

He looked away.

That was answer enough.

The room became painfully quiet.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“I knew about Robert.””

Everyone looked at her.

“What?””

She lowered her eyes.

“Not everything.””

Dad stared.

“When?””

“After Claire died.””

My heart sank.

“You knew someone was responsible?””

Vanessa cried.

“I suspected.””

“Suspected?””

Dad’s voice broke.

“My wife died, and you suspected someone?””

“I was afraid.””

Again.

That word.

Afraid.

I looked at her.

“You let us live with a murderer?””

Her face collapsed.

“I didn’t know.””

“But you knew enough.””

She couldn’t argue.

Because she did.

The next morning, Dad contacted authorities.

The evidence was enough to reopen the investigation into my mother’s death.

For the first time in years, people were finally asking the questions my mother wanted answered.

But Robert disappeared.

Of course he did.

People like him always ran when the truth caught up.

For two weeks, we searched.

Then one afternoon, Dad received a call.

He answered.

His expression changed.

“He wants to meet.””

I stood.

“Who?””

Dad looked at me.

“Robert.””

My stomach tightened.

“Where?””

“An old warehouse outside the city.””

“No.””

Dad looked at me.

“Aaliyah—”

“You’re not going alone.””

He sighed.

“I knew you would say that.””

Mia stepped forward.

“I’m coming too.””

We both looked at her.

She shrugged.

“I know I don’t deserve to be included.””

Her voice became softer.

“But I spent years making things worse.””

She looked at me.

“I want to help make something right.””

For the first time, I saw Mia differently.

Not as my enemy.

Not as the girl with the scissors.

Just as someone who had made terrible choices and was trying to change.

The warehouse was empty when we arrived.

Too empty.

Dad walked ahead.

“Robert?””

A voice echoed.

“David.””

A man stepped from the shadows.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

Robert.

The man who had smiled in our family photos.

The man who had hugged me at graduation.

The man who had told my father he was lucky to have me.

“You ruined everything.””

Dad stared.

“You ruined my family.””

Robert laughed quietly.

“Your family was already built on lies.””

I stepped forward.

“You killed my mother.””

His eyes moved to me.

For a moment, he looked almost guilty.

Then it disappeared.

“Your mother made a choice.””

My hands curled into fists.

“What choice?””

“She chose David.””

I frowned.

“What?””

Robert smiled.

“She knew the truth about you.””

The air went cold.

“What truth?””

He looked at my father.

Then back at me.

“The truth your mother never wanted you to know.””

Dad stepped forward.

“Don’t.””

Robert ignored him.

“Aaliyah…”

He smiled.

“Your mother wasn’t protecting you from Daniel.””

May you like

My heart stopped.

“She was protecting you from me.””
