Chapter 7: The Letter That Changed My Family Forever
I read the first line again.
Then again.
The words didn’t change.
“Aaliyah, if anything happens to me, you need to know the truth about who your father really is…”
My fingers went numb.
I looked at Dad.
He wasn’t looking at me.
He was staring at the floor.
And that scared me more than the letter.
Because my father had always been the person who fought.
The person who stood between me and the world.
But now he looked like someone who had been caught carrying a secret he had spent years burying.
“Dad?””
He slowly looked up.
“I can explain.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“Read it.””
He looked away.
“Aaliyah—”
“Read it.””
The room was silent.
Vanessa sat across from us, crying quietly.
Dad took the letter from my hands.
His eyes moved across the page.
Then he closed them.
“What does it say?””
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
His hands tightened around the paper.
Finally, he began.
“‘Aaliyah, I don’t know when you will read this. I hope you never have to. I hope I was just being afraid. But if you are reading this, something has happened.’”
My chest tightened.
“Keep going.””
Dad swallowed.
“‘Your father loves you more than anything. Never doubt that. But there are things about your birth that I never told him.’”
The room became completely still.
I felt like the ground beneath me had moved.
My birth?
“What does that mean?””
Dad looked at me.
“I don’t know.””
I laughed once.
A painful, empty sound.
“Everyone says that.””
He looked hurt.
But I couldn’t stop.
“For years, everyone has known something except me.””
Vanessa whispered:
“Aaliyah…”
“No.””
I turned toward her.
“You don’t get to say my name like you understand.””
She looked down.
And for once, she didn’t defend herself.
Dad continued reading.
“‘Daniel was not the only person who betrayed us. There is another truth I discovered, and I was afraid of what it would do to our family.’”
He stopped.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What truth?””
His eyes moved back to the letter.
“‘I found documents that prove someone changed information years ago. Someone wanted Aaliyah to believe a lie.’”
My heart started pounding.
“What lie?””
Dad stared at the page.
Then he whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I stood.
“I’m done.””
Dad looked up.
“Aaliyah.””
“No.””
Tears burned my eyes.
“I’m done sitting here while everyone decides what pieces of my life I’m allowed to have.””
I grabbed my jacket.
Dad stood.
“Where are you going?””
“Somewhere nobody has secrets about me.””
“That’s not fair.””
I stopped.
Slowly turned around.
“Fair?””
My voice shook.
“Dad, someone tried to destroy my scholarship. Someone destroyed my dress. Someone hid my mother’s truth. And every single time, I find out after the damage is done.””
He looked devastated.
But I couldn’t ignore what I felt.
I walked outside.
The cold air hit my face.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t know if home was somewhere I could return to.
I drove back to campus that night.
I ignored every call.
Every message.
Until one message appeared.
From Mia.
I almost deleted it.
Almost.
Then I saw the words.
Please answer. It’s about Mom.
My hands froze.
I called her.
She picked up immediately.
“Aaliyah?””
“What do you know?””
Silence.
Then:
“I found something in Vanessa’s room.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course you did.””
“I’m serious.””
Her voice sounded scared.
“There’s a box.””
“What kind of box?””
“I don’t know.””
“Then why are you calling me?””
“Because your name is on it.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“I found it after you left.””
I stood from my bed.
“Mia, what does it say?””
She hesitated.
Then whispered:
“Property of Aaliyah Johnson.””
My stomach dropped.
“Where are you?””
“At home.””
“I’m coming.””
I grabbed my keys.
May you like
For the first time in months, Mia and I were on the same side.
But neither of us knew what was waiting inside that box.
