Chapter 6: The Call That Exposed Everything

My father stared at the phone.

Vanessa’s name continued flashing across the screen.

Neither of us moved.

It was strange how one name could suddenly feel like a threat.

For years, Vanessa had been the woman who cooked dinner.

The woman who drove me to school.

The woman who stood beside my father at family events.

But now, all I could see was the person who had known secrets about my mother.

The person who had watched Mia hurt me.

The person who had hidden things.

The phone rang again.

Dad finally answered.

“Hello?””

I couldn’t hear Vanessa’s words.

Only Dad’s reactions.

His expression became harder.

Then confused.

Then angry.

“No.””

A pause.

“You don’t get to say that now.””

Another pause.

He stood.

“I’m with Aaliyah.””

My heart jumped.

Why did that matter?

Why did Vanessa care that I was there?

Dad looked at me.

Then back at the phone.

“She knows about the letters.””

Silence.

Even from across the room, I could feel Vanessa’s panic.

Dad’s jaw tightened.

“You should have told us years ago.””

Another pause.

Then his voice lowered.

“Wait.””

He looked at the photograph in my hand.

“What do you mean Daniel wasn’t the only one involved?””

My blood froze.

Dad listened.

His face slowly changed.

“What?””

I stood.

“Dad?””

He raised a hand, asking me to wait.

But I couldn’t.

“Who else was involved?””

He ended the call.

Not because Vanessa stopped talking.

Because he chose to.

“What did she say?””

He looked exhausted.

“She wants to meet.””

“Why?””

“She said there are things I need to hear from her directly.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.””

Dad didn’t disagree.

An hour later, Vanessa arrived.

Alone.

No Mia.

No excuses.

Just Vanessa standing on our porch looking like someone who had carried a secret for too long.

Dad opened the door.

She looked past him.

At me.

“Aaliyah.””

I didn’t move.

“You knew my mother.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She looked down.

“Because I was ashamed.””

I crossed my arms.

“That doesn’t explain anything.””

“No.””

Her voice broke.

“It doesn’t.””

Dad stepped aside.

“Come in.””

We sat at the same kitchen table where so many arguments had happened.

But this time, Vanessa wasn’t defending Mia.

She was defending herself.

“I met your mother when we were twenty-two,” Vanessa said.

I listened.

“She was the kindest person I had ever known.””

“Then why did you hide her?””

Vanessa flinched.

“I didn’t hide her.””

“You hid your relationship with her.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

She took a deep breath.

“Because I made a mistake.””

The room became silent.

“What mistake?””

Vanessa looked at my father.

Then at me.

“Daniel and I were involved in something we shouldn’t have been.””

Dad’s expression changed.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Daniel made a terrible choice.””

“What choice?””

“He borrowed money.””

Dad frowned.

“What does that have to do with my wife?””

Vanessa’s hands shook.

“Your mother found out.””

“About what?””

Vanessa looked at me.

And I knew whatever came next would hurt.

“Daniel was stealing from people.””

My stomach dropped.

“Who?””

She whispered:

“Your father.””

Dad went completely still.

“What?””

“He had access to your business records because I introduced him to your family.””

The silence was unbearable.

“You brought him into our lives?””

Vanessa started crying.

“I didn’t know what he was doing.””

“But Mom knew.””

“Yes.””

“And she confronted him?””

Vanessa nodded.

“That night…”

She stopped.

I leaned forward.

“What happened that night?””

She looked terrified.

“The night your mother died…”

Dad stood immediately.

“Stop.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“No. She deserves to know.””

My heart pounded.

Dad’s face went pale.

Vanessa continued.

“Your mother wasn’t just in a car accident.””

The room disappeared.

“What?””

My voice barely came out.

Vanessa looked at me.

“She was on her way to meet Daniel.””

Dad whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“No.””

She reached into her bag.

And placed an old envelope on the table.

“I found this after she died.””

Dad stared at it.

“What is it?””

Vanessa pushed it toward him.

“A letter your mother wrote before she left that night.””

My hands trembled.

Dad opened the envelope.

He read silently.

Then his face changed.

He looked at me.

And I knew.

Whatever was written inside wasn’t about Vanessa.

It wasn’t about Daniel.

It was about me.

Dad slowly handed me the letter.

May you like

And the first line made my entire world stop.

“Aaliyah, if anything happens to me, you need to know the truth about who your father really is…”
