Chapter 5: The Man in the Photograph

My father didn’t answer.

That scared me more than the name itself.

I had seen Dad angry.

I had seen him disappointed.

I had seen him break down when he realized Vanessa had protected Mia over me.

But I had never seen him afraid.

Not until that moment.

“Dad?””

He looked at the letter in my hand.

Then away.

“Aaliyah, put that down.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“No.””

His eyes met mine.

“What?””

“I’m done putting things down.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

“I’m done being told something is too complicated. Too painful. Too adult for me.””

He looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

Because he knew I was right.

I placed the letter on the table.

“Who is Daniel?””

My father sat down slowly.

For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was the ticking clock above the kitchen doorway.

Finally, he said:

“Daniel was someone your mother knew.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

His voice was quiet.

“It isn’t.””

I waited.

He rubbed his forehead.

“Your mother and Vanessa were friends.””

I felt like the air had disappeared.

“Friends?””

“Yes.””

“Then why did Vanessa act like she barely knew us?””

“I don’t know.””

“Dad.””

He looked at me.

“Because something happened between them.””

“What?””

He looked toward the box.

“I was hoping I would never have to tell you this.””

I almost laughed.

“That seems to be everyone’s favorite sentence.””

He closed his eyes.

“When your mother was alive, Vanessa was going through a difficult time.””

I listened carefully.

“She was struggling financially. Her first marriage had ended badly. She felt like she had lost everything.””

“And Mom helped her?””

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

That sounded like my mother.

“She let Vanessa stay with us for a while.””

I stared.

“Wait.””

The pieces started connecting.

“Vanessa lived here?””

“Yes.””

“Before she married you?””

“Yes.””

I stood up.

“No.””

Dad looked at me.

“What?””

“You told me she came into our lives after Mom died.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His silence answered before his words did.

“Because I didn’t know the whole story.””

I felt dizzy.

“How could you not know?””

“Because your mother hid things from me.””

I looked at the letters.

“And Vanessa?””

He swallowed.

“Vanessa knew.””

I walked away from the table.

The same woman who had defended Mia.

The same woman who had told me a ruined dress was “only fabric.””

She had known my mother.

She had history with my family.

And nobody told me.

I picked up another photograph from the box.

It showed my mother standing in our backyard.

She was smiling.

Beside her was Vanessa.

Younger.

Happier.

And standing next to them was a man.

A man with dark hair and a familiar smile.

“Is that Daniel?””

Dad nodded.

“Yes.””

“Who was he?””

My father looked at the picture.

“He was Vanessa’s brother.””

I stared.

“Her brother?””

“Yes.””

“Then why was he in a letter to Mom?””

Dad didn’t answer.

I flipped through the photographs.

Then I found another one.

This one made my hands go cold.

It was taken inside our house.

The same house I grew up in.

My mother was sitting on the couch.

Vanessa was standing behind her.

And Daniel was beside them.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written a date.

A date three months before my mother died.

I turned it over.

There were only six words.

But they changed everything.

“David can never know what happened.””

I looked at my father.

He was staring at the photograph.

Like he was seeing a ghost.

“Dad?””

His voice was barely a whisper.

“I thought that was destroyed.””

“What?””

He reached for the photograph.

“Aaliyah…”

“What?””

He looked terrified.

“That picture was supposed to be gone.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Why?””

He didn’t answer.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

And his face changed.

I knew that expression.

Something had happened.

“Who is it?””

He slowly turned the phone toward me.

May you like

The name on the screen made my blood run cold.

Vanessa.
