Chapter 8: The Box Hidden in Vanessa’s Closet
When I arrived at the house, Mia was standing outside before I even reached the front door.
That alone told me how serious it was.
Mia never waited for anyone.
Not for apologies.
Not for conversations.
Not even when she was wrong.
But that night, she looked terrified.
“You came.””
I looked at her.
“You said my name was on a box.””
She nodded.
“I wasn’t lying.””
I followed her inside.
The house felt strange.
Almost abandoned.
No music.
No television.
No Vanessa cooking in the kitchen.
Just silence.
“Where is she?””
Mia looked away.
“She left.””
“Where?””
“I don’t know.””
That answer bothered me.
Everyone always disappeared when the truth arrived.
Mia led me upstairs.
To Vanessa’s bedroom.
I stopped at the doorway.
I had never entered this room without permission.
It felt wrong.
Almost like stepping into someone’s hidden life.
Mia walked to the closet.
“I found it behind some old blankets.””
She pulled out a small wooden box.
It was covered in dust.
My name was written on top.
Aaliyah Johnson.
I stared at it.
“Why would Vanessa have this?””
Mia didn’t answer.
Because neither of us knew.
I opened the box.
Inside was a collection of papers.
Old photographs.
A necklace.
And a small envelope.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
The handwriting was familiar.
My mother’s.
I opened it.
The letter was short.
Only a few paragraphs.
“Aaliyah,
If you have found this, then the truth has finally reached you.
I wanted to protect you.
I wanted you to grow up without carrying the weight of adult mistakes.
But I also need you to know something.
You were never a mistake.
Never.
No matter what anyone tells you, you were loved from the moment you existed.””
I stopped reading.
My eyes filled.
Mia looked away.
She was crying too.
I continued.
“Your father knows you are his daughter in every way that matters. But there is something about your birth that he was never told.””
My heart raced.
Again.
The same words.
Another secret.
The letter continued.
“Before I met David, there was someone else.””
I stopped.
Mia whispered:
“Someone else?””
I kept reading.
“I was young. I made choices I regret. But when I learned I was pregnant, I knew one thing.””
My hands tightened.
“I would protect my child.””
The next sentence made me stop.
Because it wasn’t about my father.
It was about Daniel.
“I discovered Daniel knew more about my past than he admitted.””
I looked at Mia.
“Why does everyone connect to Daniel?””
She didn’t answer.
The letter continued.
“Daniel threatened to reveal something that could hurt Aaliyah. I refused to let him use my daughter against me.””
My breathing became uneven.
My daughter.
Not his.
Mine.
The letter ended with one final sentence.
“If Daniel ever tells you that he is your biological father, do not believe him.””
I dropped the paper.
The room spun.
Mia stared at me.
“What?””
I couldn’t speak.
My entire life had just shifted.
A name.
A person.
A possibility I never imagined.
Mia picked up the letter.
Her eyes moved quickly.
Then she looked at me.
“Aaliyah…”
“What?””
She pointed at the date.
“This was written before your mother died.””
I nodded.
“So?””
Mia looked toward the door.
Her face went pale.
“Because someone was here after this was written.””
I frowned.
“What are you talking about?””
She held up the envelope.
“There’s a second page missing.””
My heart sank.
“What?””
“She wrote more.””
“How do you know?””
Mia turned the envelope around.
At the bottom was a torn edge.
Someone had ripped out a page.
Then we heard something downstairs.
A door closing.
Mia and I froze.
“Did you lock the front door?””
She nodded slowly.
“Yes.””
Footsteps moved across the floor.
Someone was inside.
I whispered:
“Who is that?””
Mia grabbed my hand.
For the first time in our lives, we were both afraid of the same person.
The footsteps stopped outside the bedroom.
Then the door handle moved.
Slowly.
And a voice said:
“Aaliyah…”
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Because I knew that voice.
It was Vanessa.
