Chapter 12: The File Hidden Under My Name
The next morning, I sat in my father’s office surrounded by documents.
For years, I thought paperwork was boring.
Birth certificates.
School records.
Medical forms.
Just pieces of paper.
But now I knew better.
Paper could hide lives.
Paper could change identities.
Paper could destroy families.
Dad placed a folder in front of me.
My name was written across it.
Aaliyah Johnson.
Again.
Always my name.
“What is this?””
“The file your mother left.””
I looked at him.
“Why didn’t you show me before?””
He looked down.
“Because I was afraid.””
I nodded slowly.
At least this time, he admitted it.
“What’s inside?””
He opened it.
The first page was a legal document.
Then another.
Then another.
I read quickly.
My eyes stopped.
“What is this?””
Dad looked at the paper.
“A trust agreement.””
“For me?””
He nodded.
“Your mother created it before she died.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
“Because she knew something could happen.””
I kept reading.
The document explained that money had been placed in an account under my name.
Money.
A lot of it.
But that wasn’t what shocked me.
The next page had Daniel’s name.
I looked up.
“Why is he connected to my trust?””
Dad’s face tightened.
“Because he tried to access it.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
“After your mother died.””
“When?””
“Years ago.””
I stared.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were a child.””
I looked away.
Another secret.
Another decision made for me.
“What did he want?””
Dad pointed to the document.
“Control.””
I read the page.
Daniel had attempted to prove legal parentage.
Not because he wanted custody.
Because if he was recognized as my biological father, he could gain access to the trust.
My hands went cold.
“He wanted my money.””
“Yes.””
Everything suddenly made sense.
The jealousy.
The letters.
The lies.
The birth records.
Daniel wasn’t trying to be part of my life.
He was trying to use me.
I looked at Dad.
“How did Mom stop him?””
He handed me another paper.
“She transferred control to me.””
I read the document.
The final signature was my mother’s.
But there was something else.
A witness.
My eyes moved down.
Then stopped.
“Vanessa?””
Dad nodded.
“She helped your mother.””
I looked confused.
“So Vanessa wasn’t the villain?””
Dad sighed.
“She made terrible choices.””
“Yes.””
“But she also protected you.””
That was harder to accept.
Because people weren’t simple.
Vanessa had hurt me.
She had failed me.
But she had also carried my mother’s final wishes for years.
Then the office door opened.
Mia stood there.
“I found something.””
Everyone turned.
She held a laptop.
“What?””
She walked in.
“I remembered something from when I was younger.””
Dad frowned.
“Mia.””
“No, Dad. I need to say this.””
She looked at me.
“When I changed your scholarship emails, I found an old account connected to your name.””
My heart sank.
“What account?””
“I don’t know.””
She opened the laptop.
“But I found messages.””
She turned the screen toward us.
An email chain.
From years ago.
Between Daniel and someone else.
The first message was enough.
Daniel:
The girl is the key. Once she is old enough, everything changes.
I felt sick.
Mia scrolled.
The next message appeared.
From another person.
A person whose name I recognized.
I stopped breathing.
Because the sender was not Daniel.
Not Vanessa.
Not some stranger.
It was someone in my own family.
Dad looked at the screen.
His face went white.
“No.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
I stepped closer.
“Who sent it?””
Dad didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because the name was right there.
The person who had been helping Daniel all along.
The person who knew every secret.
The person who had been watching us.
My mother’s name appeared at the bottom of the email thread.

And underneath it were the words:
I’m ready to finish what we started.
