Chapter 13: The Final Secret My Mother Left Behind

The email stayed on the screen.

My mother’s name.

Those words beneath it.

I’m ready to finish what we started.

Nobody moved.

Nobody breathed.

It felt impossible.

My mother had been gone for years.

How could she be part of something that was still happening?

I looked at Dad.

His face had lost all color.

“Say something.””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He slowly sat down.

“I don’t understand.””

Mia looked at the screen.

“Could someone have used her account?””

Dad shook his head.

“No.””

“How do you know?””

“Because that email address was created the month before she died.””

My stomach tightened.

“So she sent it?””

“I don’t know.””

The words were becoming unbearable.

Everyone always said the same thing.

I don’t know.

I looked at the laptop.

“Open the entire thread.””

Mia hesitated.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“But I need to know.””

She clicked.

The messages loaded.

The first few were years old.

Most were between Daniel and an unknown sender.

But the unknown sender had a name.

Claire.

My mother.

The first message from her was short.

Daniel,

You made a mistake thinking you could control me.

I stared.

Daniel had been talking to my mother.

Even after her death?

Mia scrolled.

Another message.

You threatened my daughter. You threatened my family. You forgot one thing.

I swallowed.

“What thing?””

Mia kept reading.

The next message answered.

I know everything you did.

My father stood.

“What did he do?””

No one answered.

The emails continued.

My mother had discovered Daniel was involved in financial crimes.

But there was something worse.

Daniel wasn’t just stealing money.

He was using people’s identities.

Changing records.

Creating false documents.

And my birth records weren’t his first attempt.

He had done it before.

To other families.

I felt sick.

“He wasn’t trying to get custody.””

Dad looked at me.

“No.””

“He was trying to erase evidence.””

“Yes.””

Mia looked confused.

“But why Aaliyah?””

Dad pointed at the screen.

“Because your mother found out.””

I kept reading.

My mother had discovered that Daniel planned to disappear.

She had copied documents.

Saved evidence.

Created a backup plan.

And then came the message that made my hands shake.

Daniel:

You think David will believe you?

Claire:

He will believe the truth.

Daniel:

He will hate you when he learns what you did.

Claire:

No.

The next line was from my mother.

He will hate me only if I die before I explain.

I stopped.

The room became silent.

My mother knew.

She knew something could happen.

She knew she might not survive.

But she still fought.

I looked at Dad.

“She knew.””

He nodded.

“She was trying to protect us.””

I looked back at the screen.

There was one final message.

A message sent the night before my mother died.

Claire:

If anything happens to me, give Aaliyah the truth when she is ready.

Daniel:

She will never know.

My chest tightened.

Then another message.

From my mother.

She will.

Because I left everything she needs.

Below it was an attachment.

A file.

Nobody noticed it before.

Mia clicked.

The file opened.

A video.

My hands covered my mouth.

“My mother recorded something.””

Dad stared.

“Play it.””

Mia pressed the button.

The screen flickered.

Then my mother appeared.

Older than the pictures I knew.

Tired.

But smiling.

“Hi, Aaliyah.””

I stopped breathing.

Hearing her voice was like hearing a ghost.

“I don’t know when you will see this.””

Her eyes moved away for a moment.

“If you are watching this, then I wasn’t able to tell you myself.””

Tears filled my eyes.

My mother looked directly into the camera.

“I need you to know one thing first.””

She smiled sadly.

“You were the best thing that ever happened to me.””

I couldn’t look away.

“I know people will tell you stories about who I was. About what I did. About the choices I made.””

She paused.

“But the most important choice I ever made was choosing you.””

Dad covered his face.

My mother continued.

“Daniel may tell you he is your father. He may tell you he loved you.””

Her expression changed.

“Don’t confuse wanting something with loving it.””

I felt a chill.

“He wanted control. Not a daughter.””

She looked down.

“David is your father because he chose you every day.””

My tears fell.

Then my mother said something that changed everything.

“But there is one person you need to forgive.””

I frowned.

Who?

The video continued.

“Vanessa.””

Everyone froze.

My mother looked into the camera.

“She made mistakes. But she saved your life.””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

My mother continued.

“She was the person who helped me hide the documents. She was the person who protected you when Daniel came looking.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She was crying.

Then my mother said:

“But she was not the person who betrayed us.””

The screen flickered.

The video ended.

And a final file appeared.

A name.

The person who betrayed us.

Dad clicked it.

May you like

The document opened.

And at the top was a name none of us expected.
