Chapter 9: The Truth Behind The Betrayal

For the first time that night, I wondered if Michael had been telling the truth.

Not because I trusted him.

I didn’t.

But because every answer created three more questions.

I stared at the message on Ryan’s phone.

Michael was trying to warn me.

Impossible.

A man who showed up at my house after midnight.

A man who knew about my father’s hidden box.

A man who had lied to me for years.

How could he be protecting me?

Ryan took the phone back.

“We need to leave.””

I looked at him.

“Where?””

“Somewhere safe.””

I almost smiled.

“Safe?””

My voice was tired.

“Ryan, I don’t even know if my own bedroom is safe anymore.””

He looked hurt.

But he didn’t argue.

That hurt even more.

Because he knew.

Vanessa grabbed her coat.

“I need to show you something.””

I looked at her.

“What now?””

She pulled a folder from her bag.

“I found this before your father died.””

Ryan looked surprised.

“You still had it?””

“Yes.””

“What is it?””

Vanessa opened the folder.

Inside were copies of emails.

Financial records.

Photos.

And one name repeated over and over.

Not Michael.

Not Ryan.

Someone else.

I read the name.

My hands went cold.

“Daniel?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father’s business partner.””

I frowned.

“But Daniel died years ago.””

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

“What are you saying?””

She pointed at the documents.

“Your father discovered Daniel was still alive.””

I stared at the papers.

“That’s impossible.””

“Your father thought so too.””

Ryan picked up one of the photos.

A man standing outside an office.

Older.

Different haircut.

But the same face.

Ryan whispered:

“Daniel.””

I looked at him.

“You knew him?””

“Everyone in your father’s company knew him.””

Vanessa nodded.

“He disappeared after the investigation started.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because your father found proof that Daniel was the person stealing from the company.””

I looked at the documents.

“But why would he fake his death?””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“Because dead men can’t be investigated.””

The room became silent.

My phone buzzed.

Another unknown number.

This time, a video.

I pressed play.

A man appeared on screen.

Older.

Tired.

But alive.

Daniel.

My breath stopped.

He looked directly into the camera.

“Emily Hart.””

The way he said my name made my skin crawl.

“I know you’re looking for answers.””

I stepped closer.

The video continued.

“But before you trust Ryan, you need to know what he did the night your father died.””

Ryan immediately said:

“Turn it off.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

His face changed.

Because whatever Daniel was about to say…

Ryan already knew.

The video continued.

“Ryan wasn’t your father’s protector.””

A pause.

“He was the reason your father couldn’t trust anyone.””

I looked at Ryan.

He whispered:

“Emily, don’t believe him.””

But I couldn’t look away.

Because Daniel’s final words were:

“Ask your husband what he was forced to do before Julian Hart died.””

The video ended.

And for the first time…

I wondered if the man who saved me had also been the man who destroyed my family.
