Chapter 4: The Name On The Box
The name engraved on the black box made my entire body go cold.
It wasn’t Ryan.
It wasn’t Vanessa.
It wasn’t some stranger I had never met.
It was a name I had seen thousands of times.
A name I trusted.
A name I had defended.
JULIAN HART.
My father’s name.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The room felt too small.
Too quiet.
I stared at the box in Ryan’s hands.
“Why does my father’s name have to do with this?””
Ryan looked down.
“Because he left it for you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“My father died three years ago.””
“I know.””
“Then stop talking like he’s still part of this.””
Ryan swallowed.
“He is.””
Those two words hurt more than anything else.
I stepped closer.
“Open it.””
Ryan didn’t move.
“Emily…”
“Open it.””
My voice cracked.
But I didn’t care.
I had spent months believing my marriage was the only thing in my life I could trust.
Now I was standing in my own bedroom, surrounded by strangers who knew more about my family than I did.
Ryan slowly opened the box.
Inside was a small flash drive.
A handwritten letter.
And an old photograph.
I picked up the photograph first.
My fingers trembled.
It showed my father standing beside Ryan.
But it wasn’t recent.
It was taken years before I met him.
Before our wedding.
Before I even knew Ryan existed.
I looked at my husband.
“You knew my father before you met me.””
Ryan nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
His eyes dropped.
“Because your father asked me not to.””
I stared at him.
“My father asked you to hide your entire relationship with him?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Ryan looked at the flash drive.
“Because someone inside his company was trying to destroy him.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“And Ryan was supposed to find out who.””
I turned toward her.
“You were involved too?””
She nodded slowly.
“I worked in the finance department. Your father trusted me.””
“Then why did he think you betrayed him?””
Her face tightened.
“Because someone made it look like I did.””
Ryan placed the box on the bed.
“Your father discovered millions were missing from company accounts.””
I looked at the letter.
“Who stole it?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That terrified me.
“Who?””
His voice was barely a whisper.
“Someone close to your family.””
The words hung in the air.
I opened the letter.
The handwriting was immediately familiar.
My father’s handwriting.
The same handwriting that used to appear on birthday cards.
The same handwriting from notes he left on my lunch bag when I was a child.
Emily,
If you are reading this, something happened before I could tell you the truth.
My hands started shaking.
Ryan watched me carefully.
The letter continued.
I need you to understand one thing. The person who hurt me was not a stranger.
I stopped reading.
My eyes moved to Ryan.
Then Vanessa.
“Who?””
Ryan looked away.
I continued.
The person responsible has been standing beside you for years.
My heart sank.
Someone beside me.
Someone I knew.
Someone I trusted.
I kept reading.
Do not trust anyone who tells you they were trying to protect you. Sometimes that is the easiest excuse people use when they are hiding the truth.
I lowered the letter.
Because one person had said that exact thing to me tonight.
Ryan.
“I need answers.””
Ryan nodded.
“You deserve them.””
“Then start.””
He took a deep breath.
“The night your father died wasn’t an accident.””
The room went silent.
My throat tightened.
“What are you saying?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Your father was trying to expose someone.””
“Who?””
Ryan hesitated.
Then my phone buzzed.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
I looked down.
There was only one sentence.
*Ask Ryan why he was at your father’s house the night he died.*
I looked up slowly.
Ryan’s face had lost all color.
May you like
Because he knew exactly who sent it.
And that meant someone else was watching.
