Chapter 10: The Choice Ryan Made
The room stayed silent long after the video ended.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because Daniel’s final words were still hanging in the air.
Ask your husband what he was forced to do before Julian Hart died.
I looked at Ryan.
Not the man from our wedding photos.
Not the man who held me when I cried.
Not the man who whispered promises in the dark.
I looked at the man standing in front of me, carrying years of secrets.
“What did he mean?””
Ryan didn’t answer.
That was enough.
My heart sank.
“Ryan.””
He closed his eyes.
“I didn’t kill your father.””
“I didn’t ask that.””
My voice was shaking.
“I asked what you did.””
Vanessa looked away.
She already knew.
That hurt.
Everyone knew except me.
Ryan sat down slowly.
“I need to tell you everything.””
I crossed my arms.
“Finally.””
He looked at the floor.
“The night your father died, he called me because he discovered Daniel was stealing from the company.””
I listened.
“He had evidence.””
“The box.””
Ryan nodded.
“He told me to take it and protect it.””
“Why didn’t he take it himself?””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Because he knew someone was watching him.””
A chill moved through me.
“Who?””
Ryan looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“We never found out.””
“Never?””
He shook his head.
“But your father knew he might not survive the night.””
I swallowed.
“Then what happened?””
Ryan took a deep breath.
“I arrived at his house around midnight.””
The memory seemed painful.
“He was in his office. He was angry. Scared.””
“Scared of what?””
“Of someone close to him.””
My hands tightened.
“Michael?””
Ryan hesitated.
“I thought it was Michael.””
“But now?””
He looked at the documents.
“Now I don’t know.””
That answer terrified me.
Because Ryan had spent years believing one thing.
And now even he wasn’t sure.
“I found your father unconscious.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
“He had already been attacked.””
I looked at him.
“You said accident.””
Ryan looked ashamed.
“Because that’s what I told everyone.””
My eyes widened.
“You lied.””
“Yes.””
The honesty hurt.
“Why?””
“Because your father was still alive when I found him.””
The room went completely still.
“What?””
Ryan’s voice became quiet.
“He grabbed my hand.””
I felt tears forming.
“What did he say?””
Ryan looked at me.
“He said one thing.””
“What?””
Ryan swallowed.
“‘Don’t let them turn my daughter into a weapon.’”
My breath caught.
My father’s words.
My entire life had been shaped by that one sentence.
“What happened next?””
Ryan looked down.
“I called for help.””
“And?””
“The police came.””
“Then why did you hide everything?””
His face tightened.
“Because before they arrived, someone entered the house.””
“Who?””
Ryan shook his head.
“I never saw their face.””
“Then why hide it?””
“Because they took something.””
My eyes moved to the box.
“The evidence?””
Ryan nodded.
“But they missed one thing.””
“The flash drive.””
“Yes.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“So why did you two have an affair?””
The question filled the room.
Vanessa lowered her eyes.
Ryan looked ashamed.
“It wasn’t supposed to happen.””
“That doesn’t answer me.””
He nodded.
“You’re right.””
His voice cracked.
“After your father died, Vanessa and I kept searching for the person responsible.””
I stared at him.
“Together.””
“Yes.””
“And somewhere along the way?””
He looked away.
“I made a mistake.””
I laughed softly.
“A mistake?””
My eyes burned.
“You destroyed our marriage.””
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I stepped closer.
“You don’t know what it feels like to find another woman in your bed.””
Ryan looked broken.
But I didn’t care.
Not yet.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Emily.””
I looked at her.
“I need to tell you something.””
“What?””
She took a deep breath.
“Ryan didn’t bring me into your house.””
I frowned.
“What?””
She looked at him.
“He brought me here because he believed someone else had access to the house.””
I froze.
“What are you talking about?””
Vanessa pointed toward the bedroom.
“The person who moved the box.””
Ryan nodded slowly.
“Someone had already searched your room before you came home.””
I stared.
“Who?””
Ryan looked toward the front door.
Then at the security camera monitor.
“Someone who knew exactly where your father’s evidence was hidden.””
He walked toward the screen.
And when the footage loaded…
My blood ran cold.
Because the person entering my house three nights earlier wasn’t Michael.
May you like
It wasn’t Daniel.
It was someone I trusted completely.
