Chapter 7: The Uncle Who Knew Too Much
The sound of Michael’s footsteps echoed through the house.
Slow.
Calm.
Confident.
That was what scared me the most.
He wasn’t rushing.
He wasn’t panicking.
He walked through my home like he belonged there.
Like he had done it before.
Ryan grabbed my arm gently.
“Emily, listen to me.””
I pulled away.
“No.””
His eyes tightened.
“Please.””
“No more secrets.””
I held the black box against my chest.
“No more promises you made to my father. No more protecting me by lying to me.””
Ryan looked like he wanted to argue.
But he stopped.
Because he knew I was right.
Downstairs, Michael called again.
“Emily? I know you’re upset.””
My stomach turned.
Upset.
That was the word he chose.
Not scared.
Not confused.
Upset.
Like this was just a family disagreement.
Like he hadn’t walked into my house after discovering I found my father’s hidden evidence.
Vanessa whispered, “He knows.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
She looked toward the stairs.
“Because he’s been watching for this moment.””
I wanted to ask a hundred questions.
But before I could, Ryan moved toward the bedroom door.
“What are you doing?””
“I’m going downstairs.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“If Michael came here, he didn’t come to talk.””
“Then why are you going?””
“Because he came for the box.””
The words made my grip tighten.
Michael wanted the box.
Not me.
Not an explanation.
The evidence.
Ryan slowly opened the bedroom door.
We stepped into the hallway.
The house felt different.
It was the same place I had lived in for years.
Same walls.
Same pictures.
Same furniture.
But suddenly every corner felt like it was hiding something.
We reached the staircase.
Michael stood in the living room.
He looked exactly like he always did.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
The same uncle who brought me birthday gifts.
The same man who cried at my father’s funeral.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“Emily.””
I didn’t answer.
His eyes moved to the box in my hands.
And the smile disappeared.
Only for a second.
But I saw it.
“You found it.””
Not a question.
A statement.
Ryan stepped in front of me.
“How did you know?””
Michael looked at him.
“You were always too loyal.””
Ryan’s jaw tightened.
“You killed him.””
The room became silent.
Michael looked almost offended.
“Careful.””
I stepped forward.
“Did you?””
He looked at me.
And somehow, his calmness hurt more than anger.
“Your father was a complicated man, Emily.””
My hands shook.
“Don’t talk about him like that.””
“He made enemies.””
“Because he found out what you were doing?””
Michael’s expression changed.
A tiny crack.
Just enough.
“What did Ryan tell you?””
I laughed.
“So that’s what matters? Not whether you betrayed my father?””
Michael sighed.
“You don’t understand what your father was involved in.””
Ryan stepped forward.
“She understands enough.””
Michael looked at him.
“You have no idea what you’re protecting her from.””
“No.””
Ryan’s voice was steady.
“I know exactly what I’m protecting her from.””
Michael stared at him.
Then smiled.
A cold smile.
“You still think Julian chose you because he trusted you.””
Ryan froze.
“What?””
Michael took a step closer.
“He chose you because you were disposable.””
My heart sank.
I looked at Ryan.
For the first time, he looked genuinely hurt.
Michael continued.
“Your father never saw you as family.””
“Stop.””
Ryan’s voice changed.
Michael smiled.
“There it is.””
He looked at me.
“Did he tell you the truth?””
I said nothing.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure.
Michael reached into his jacket.
Ryan immediately reacted.
“Don’t move.””
Michael stopped.
Then slowly pulled out a folded document.
He handed it toward me.
“Read it.””
I didn’t take it.
“What is it?””
“A copy of your father’s final will.””
My chest tightened.
“My father’s will?””
Michael nodded.
“And the reason Ryan married you.””
The room went completely still.
I looked at Ryan.
His face had gone pale.
Michael smiled.
“Ask him.””
I whispered:
“Ryan…”
He didn’t look at me.
That scared me more than anything.
“Is that true?””
Finally, Ryan answered.
And his voice broke.
“Yes.””
I felt the floor disappear beneath me.
Michael stepped back.
“Now you understand.””
But before he could say anything else, Vanessa suddenly grabbed the document from his hand.
She looked at the first page.
Then her face changed.
“Oh my God.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She turned the paper around.
And pointed at one sentence.
The sentence that changed everything.
