Chapter 1: The Woman In My Bedroom

I came home two weeks early from my business trip and found a pair of red heels sitting inside my front door.

They were the kind of heels I had once complimented at a Christmas party.

The same heels worn by Vanessa Carter.

My husband’s coworker.

For a few seconds, I stood frozen in my own entryway, still holding my suitcase handle, trying to convince myself there had to be another explanation.

I thought maybe Ryan had planned a surprise.

I thought maybe Vanessa had stopped by for work.

I thought maybe my exhausted mind was creating a nightmare because I had barely slept during my flight home.

Then I heard a woman laughing upstairs.

Not a polite laugh.

Not a casual laugh.

A comfortable laugh.

The kind of laugh someone makes when they feel like they belong somewhere.

My fingers tightened around the suitcase handle.

I had spent the last six months believing Ryan missed me every time I traveled.

Every night in Boston, he sent me messages.

“Wish you were here.””

“Can’t wait to have you back in my arms.””

“Counting the days.””

I believed him.

That was the part that hurt the most.

I slowly closed the front door behind me.

Then I heard his voice.

“Stop. She won’t be home until next Friday.””

My heart dropped.

A woman giggled.

I looked toward the coat closet and saw the baseball bat leaning against the wall.

Ryan kept it there for emergencies.

I never imagined I would pick it up because of him.

I grabbed it.

Not because I wanted to hurt anyone.

Because suddenly, I needed something solid in my hand.

Something real.

Something that could keep me standing.

I walked upstairs.

Every step felt louder than the last.

The laughter continued.

My bedroom door was half open.

Our bedroom.

The room where we had painted walls together.

The room where we chose furniture together.

The room where Ryan promised me, five years ago, that I was the only woman he would ever need.

I pushed the door open.

Ryan jumped away from the bed.

The woman beside him screamed and pulled the blanket over herself.

“Emily?””

His face went completely white.

I stared at him.

Then I looked at Vanessa.

She wasn’t a stranger.

She was the woman who hugged me at our company Christmas party.

The woman who told me, “You’re lucky to have a husband like Ryan.””

I dropped the bat.

It hit the carpet with a soft thud.

“You’ve been sleeping with her?””

Ryan immediately stepped forward.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I laughed once.

Not because anything was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t process what I was seeing.

“Listen to you?””

Vanessa sat up slowly.

She didn’t even look ashamed.

That was what broke me.

“Ryan,” I whispered.

“In our bed?””

“Emily, it’s complicated.””

“Complicated?””

I pointed around the room.

“This isn’t complicated. This is my home.””

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

And that tiny movement made something inside me snap.

“You think this is funny?””

She stood up, wrapping the sheet around herself.

“I didn’t mean for you to find out like this.””

“You didn’t mean for me to find out?””

My voice shook.

“You came into my house.””

She moved toward the door.

I stepped in front of her.

“You’re going to explain this.””

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“You want answers?””

“Yes.””

She looked at Ryan.

Then back at me.

“Ask your husband why he never told you the truth.””

My stomach tightened.

“What truth?””

Ryan immediately interrupted.

“Vanessa, stop.””

The fear in his voice wasn’t about the affair.

It was about something else.

Something bigger.

Vanessa noticed it too.

She smiled faintly.

And that scared me more than her being in my bed.

“You still haven’t told her?””

Ryan grabbed his shirt from the floor.

“Emily, don’t listen to her.””

Vanessa stepped closer.

“Open the drawer on your nightstand.””

I looked toward the small wooden drawer beside our bed.

The one Ryan always kept locked.

My eyes narrowed.

“What’s inside?””

Neither of them answered.

And that silence told me everything.

Vanessa whispered, “Something Ryan has been hiding from you for six months.””

I slowly walked toward the nightstand.

Behind me, Ryan said my name.

But for the first time in five years, I didn’t hear love in his voice.

I heard fear.

I pulled open the drawer.

And found a document with my name written across the top.
