Chapter 12: My Mother’s Final Secret

My mother stood in the doorway.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

She looked older than I remembered.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like someone who had been carrying a weight too heavy for too long.

I stared at her.

“You were in my house?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Yes.””

Ryan stepped forward.

“Why?””

My mother looked at him.

“You should ask yourself that.””

Ryan froze.

I looked between them.

“What does that mean?””

My mother walked into the room.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Like she was afraid one wrong movement would destroy everything.

“I came here because I knew you would find the box.””

I felt anger rise.

“You knew?””

She nodded.

“Your father left instructions.””

I laughed.

“Another secret message?””

She flinched.

That reaction hurt.

Because I realized she knew how much I had suffered.

And she still stayed silent.

“I found out about the box after your father died.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I promised him.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t want promises anymore.””

My mother looked down.

“I know.””

The room became quiet.

Then she looked at Ryan.

“You need to tell her the rest.””

Ryan’s face tightened.

“What?””

My mother stepped closer.

“The part your father never wanted Emily to know.””

I looked at Ryan.

“What part?””

He didn’t answer.

My mother did.

“Ryan wasn’t assigned to protect you.””

My heart sank.

“Then what?””

She looked at him.

“He was assigned to investigate you.””

I felt the world stop.

“What?””

Ryan immediately shook his head.

“No.””

My mother’s eyes filled with sadness.

“At first.””

I looked at Ryan.

“Is that true?””

He looked destroyed.

“Yes.””

I stepped back.

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because your father thought someone close to him was involved.””

“And he suspected me?””

“No.””

“Then why me?””

Ryan looked at the floor.

“Because whoever was stealing from him had access to information only family knew.””

I shook my head.

“So your job was to watch me.””

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

Even though it wasn’t what I feared.

It hurt.

“How long?””

“Six months.””

I laughed.

“Six months of dating me.””

“Yes.””

“Six months of pretending.””

“No.””

His voice became desperate.

“Emily, listen. The moment I met you, everything changed.””

“But the reason you met me was a lie.””

He had no answer.

My mother walked toward the bed.

She picked up the black box.

“There’s one more thing inside.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She opened the hidden bottom compartment.

I didn’t even know it existed.

Inside was another letter.

My father’s handwriting.

My mother handed it to me.

“This one was meant for after you learned the truth.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then the people around you have finally stopped protecting you with lies.

I looked up.

My father knew.

He knew they would lie.

The letter continued.

The person who betrayed me is not the person you think.

My heart stopped.

Again.

The next line made my entire body go cold.

I know who stole from me.

I know who tried to destroy my company.

And I know who caused my accident.

I looked at Ryan.

Then my mother.

Then Vanessa.

My father’s final words were written below.

The person responsible is someone you would never suspect.

Someone who has spent years convincing you they loved you.

I turned the page.

But the final sentence was missing.

The bottom half of the letter had been torn away.

My mother looked terrified.

“Where is the rest?””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at her.

“Mom.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Your father gave the missing piece to someone before he died.””

“Who?””

She looked at Ryan.

And whispered:

“The person he trusted most.””

Ryan’s face went pale.

May you like

Because suddenly…

He knew exactly who had the missing piece.
