Chapter 8: The Marriage That Started As A Lie

I couldn’t hear anything after that.

Guardian.

That word kept repeating in my head.

Not husband.

Not partner.

Guardian.

I looked at Ryan.

“Explain.””

He opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Michael watched him carefully.

Almost like he was waiting for him to fail.

“Tell her.””

Ryan looked at him.

“Shut up.””

Michael smiled.

“You’ve hidden behind lies long enough.””

I stepped back.

“How long?””

Ryan looked at me.

“Emily…”

“How long did you know about this?””

He swallowed.

“Before we met.””

My heart cracked.

Before we met.

Every memory suddenly felt different.

Our first date.

Our first kiss.

The day he proposed.

Was any of it real?

“Did you marry me because of my father?””

Ryan looked devastated.

“No.””

“But you knew about the will.””

“Yes.””

“And you still let me believe we met by chance?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

I laughed quietly.

It wasn’t happiness.

It was disbelief.

“You let me build my entire life on a lie.””

“I was trying to fix it.””

“You were trying to fix it?””

My voice rose.

“You were sleeping with another woman in our bed.””

Ryan looked down.

That truth hurt him too.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Emily, there’s more.””

I looked at her.

“I don’t want more secrets.””

“You need to hear this.””

I stared at her.

“Why?””

“Because the will wasn’t supposed to work like that.””

Michael’s expression changed.

“What are you doing?””

Vanessa ignored him.

“Your father wrote a condition.””

Ryan looked at her.

“Vanessa.””

She continued.

“If Emily discovered the truth before turning thirty, the trust would transfer directly to her.””

My eyes narrowed.

“What trust?””

Michael went silent.

That told me everything.

My father’s company.

The money.

The missing accounts.

All of it.

My father had left something behind.

Something Michael wanted.

Michael stepped forward.

“You have no idea what you’re talking about.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“I was the accountant who processed the documents.””

Michael’s face hardened.

“You should have stayed quiet.””

That sentence exposed him.

Not anger.

Not confusion.

Fear.

Ryan noticed it too.

“You knew about the trust.””

Michael didn’t answer.

I looked at him.

“My father trusted you.””

Michael’s face softened.

For a moment, I saw the uncle I remembered.

Then it disappeared.

“Your father was stubborn.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I held the box tighter.

“He was protecting me from you.””

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“You think you know everything because you found a box?””

“No.””

I looked at Ryan.

“I know I don’t know everything.””

Then back at Michael.

“But I know one thing.””

I stepped closer.

“You were afraid of what my father left me.””

Michael’s jaw tightened.

The silence confirmed it.

Then suddenly, his phone rang.

He looked down.

A message appeared.

His expression changed instantly.

Ryan noticed.

“What is it?””

Michael locked the screen.

“Nothing.””

But it wasn’t nothing.

Because for the first time tonight, Michael looked scared.

He looked at me.

Then at Ryan.

And walked toward the door.

“This conversation is over.””

I stepped in front of him.

“No.””

He stopped.

“You don’t get to walk away anymore.””

Michael stared at me.

Then smiled.

“You still don’t understand, Emily.””

“Understand what?””

He leaned closer.

“Your father didn’t leave you protection.””

My stomach tightened.

“He left you a target.””

The front door opened.

Michael walked out.

And seconds later, Ryan’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I moved closer.

“What happened?””

Ryan handed me the phone.

It was a message from the same unknown number.

May you like

One sentence.

*You found the wrong enemy. Michael was trying to warn you.*
