Chapter 2: The Secret Agreement
The paper was folded perfectly.
Too perfectly.
Like someone had prepared it.
Like someone had expected it to be discovered one day.
My hands shook as I unfolded it.
The first thing I saw was my name.
EMILY HART.
The second thing I saw was Ryan’s signature.
My husband’s signature.
At the bottom of a document I had never seen before.
“What is this?””
My voice was quiet.
That scared Ryan more than if I had screamed.
He stepped toward me.
“Emily, put that down.””
I looked up.
“Why?””
He stopped.
“Because you don’t understand.””
I stared at him.
“You’re right. I don’t understand.””
I held the paper tighter.
“I don’t understand why my husband is signing documents with my name on them while I’m hundreds of miles away.””
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.
For the first time, she looked uncomfortable.
“I told you she would find out.””
Ryan glared at her.
“Stay out of this.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
“No. You brought me here.””
She looked at me.
“I didn’t.””
She pointed at Ryan.
“He did.””
My chest tightened.
“What does that mean?””
Ryan ran his hand through his hair.
“Emily, there’s an explanation.””
“Then explain.””
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
That silence hurt more than the cheating.
Because I realized something.
Ryan wasn’t searching for the right words.
He was searching for a lie.
I looked back at the document.
It was an agreement between Ryan and Vanessa.
Financial paperwork.
Something about transferring ownership.
I didn’t understand every detail.
But I understood one thing.
My husband had been moving money.
A lot of money.
Without me.
“Ryan.””
He looked at me.
“Where did this money come from?””
His face changed.
That was my answer.
“You used our savings?””
“No.””
“Then what?””
He looked away.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice became stronger.
“Don’t say my name like that. Not right now.””
Vanessa stood.
“He wasn’t just hiding an affair.””
Ryan turned sharply.
“Vanessa.””
But she continued.
“He was hiding what happened before the affair.””
I felt the room spin.
“What happened?””
Ryan stepped between us.
“You need to leave.””
I almost smiled.
“Leave?””
He looked confused.
“Emily—”
“You brought another woman into our bedroom.””
I pointed at the door.
“And now you’re telling me to leave?””
His jaw tightened.
“This house is not just yours.””
I froze.
The sentence sounded familiar.
Because it was the sentence of someone who had already decided I no longer belonged.
I picked up my phone.
“I’m calling your wife.””
Vanessa went silent.
Ryan looked nervous.
Then Vanessa spoke.
“Call her.””
I looked at her.
“You’re not scared?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
“Why?””
Her eyes moved toward Ryan.
“Because his wife already knows.””
My hand lowered.
“What?””
Ryan looked away.
Vanessa continued.
“Her name is not the only one he lied to.””
A cold feeling moved through my body.
I looked at Ryan.
“Who else knows?””
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Ryan.””
Finally, he whispered:
“Your father.””
My breath stopped.
My father had been dead for three years.
“What did you say?””
Ryan looked terrified.
And then my phone rang.
The caller ID appeared.
A number I didn’t recognize.
But the voicemail notification underneath it made my blood run cold.
Because the saved name attached to it was impossible.
“Dad.””
I stared at the screen.
May you like
Ryan whispered behind me:
“Don’t answer that.””
