Chapter 9: The Passenger
For years, I had replayed that night in my head.
Every second.
Every mistake.
Every decision.
I blamed myself.
I told myself that if I had stayed home, my wife would still be alive.
If I had answered the phone.
If I had turned around.
If I had swallowed my pride.
But now Michael's words were tearing apart everything I believed.
*She wasn't driving alone.*
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who was in the passenger seat?””
She didn't answer immediately.
That scared me more than anything.
“Vanessa.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I don't know.””
I stared at her.
“You saw the car.””
“I saw the car after.””
“Then why didn't you tell me?””
She looked down.
“Because I didn't know who to trust.””
I looked around the room.
The irony almost made me laugh.
On my wedding day, surrounded by flowers and promises, I had discovered I knew almost nothing about the people closest to me.
I picked up the letter again.
There was another page folded inside.
I hadn't noticed it before.
My wife's handwriting continued.
*Daniel, if you find this, it means the truth finally reached you.*
My breathing stopped.
I kept reading.
*The person who hurt us is someone you love.*
I looked at Sophie.
Then Vanessa.
Then the phone.
Someone I love.
Michael.
The door suddenly opened.
A man stepped inside.
I knew him immediately.
Michael.
He looked exactly the same.
The same confident smile.
The same calm expression.
Like he belonged there.
Like this was still my wedding day.
“Daniel.””
My entire body tensed.
“What are you doing here?””
He glanced at Sophie.
“Checking on my niece.””
I stepped in front of her.
“You don't go near her.””
His smile faded slightly.
“That's not fair.””
“Fair?””
I laughed bitterly.
“You threatened my daughter.””
“I warned her.””
My fists tightened.
“About what?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“About the truth.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Michael, stop.””
He ignored her.
“You think I'm the villain because of one video?””
I stared at him.
“I think you're the villain because my daughter was afraid to tell me you talked to her.””
Michael's expression changed.
Just for a second.
But I saw it.
Fear.
“You asked her?””
I narrowed my eyes.
“Why?””
He didn't answer.
That silence said everything.
I walked closer.
“What were you doing at my wife's car?””
Michael sighed.
“You don't understand.””
“Then explain.””
He looked exhausted.
Almost defeated.
“I was trying to stop her from destroying this family.””
My heart dropped.
“What did she find?””
Michael looked at Vanessa.
Then at me.
“The reason your wife died.””
Nobody moved.
Sophie held my hand.
I felt her trembling.
“What does that mean?””
Michael swallowed.
Then said:
“Your wife didn't die because of the crash.””
The room went silent.
“She died because someone wanted her silent.””
I stared at him.
“Who?””
Michael looked directly at me.
And whispered:
“Your wife found out what Vanessa was really doing…”
He paused.
“And she was going to tell you.””
Vanessa stepped back.
“No.””
Michael continued.
“The person who caused all of this isn't who you think.””
My heart pounded.
“Then who?””
Michael looked at me.
And said the words I never expected.
“Daniel…”
May you like
A long pause.
“It was you.””
