Chapter 10: The Memory I Couldn’t Trust

The room went silent.

Not the kind of silence that comes from shock.

The kind that comes when everyone is waiting for something impossible to make sense.

I stared at Michael.

Then at Vanessa.

Then back at Michael.

“What did you just say?””

My voice barely sounded like mine.

Michael didn't move.

“It was you.””

My stomach twisted.

“You're saying I caused my wife's death?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“I'm saying you know more than you remember.””

I felt anger rise through the fear.

“Don't play games with me.””

“I’m not.””

Michael stepped forward.

“I spent years trying to figure out what happened that night.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because every time I tried, you shut down.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You watched me blame myself for years.””

His face changed.

A flicker of guilt crossed it.

“I thought the truth would destroy you.””

I looked at Sophie.

The little girl who had been carrying pieces of this nightmare alone.

“You don't get to decide what truth I deserve.””

Michael looked down.

“I know.””

For the first time, he looked like my brother.

Not a stranger.

Not an enemy.

Just someone who had made terrible choices.

But I wasn't ready to forgive him.

Not even close.

“Explain.””

Michael took a breath.

“The night your wife died, you left the house after your argument.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

“You went to the hotel.””

“Yes.””

“But you came back.””

My body froze.

“What?””

Michael looked at Vanessa.

“She knows.””

I turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew?””

She looked away.

My heart sank.

“How long?””

Vanessa whispered:

“Since the beginning.””

I felt betrayed all over again.

“You knew I came home?””

She nodded.

“I saw you.””

My mind raced.

I remembered the hotel.

The rain.

The anger.

But after that…

Nothing.

A blank space.

“What happened after I came home?””

Nobody answered.

I looked at Michael.

“What happened?””

He swallowed.

“You found your wife arguing with someone.””

“Who?””

Michael stayed quiet.

“Who?””

His eyes moved toward Vanessa.

My chest tightened.

“No.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“Daniel, listen to me.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You're telling me everyone knew something except me?””

Michael spoke quietly.

“The person your wife was confronting wasn't Vanessa.””

I stopped.

“Then who?””

He looked at me.

“Your business partner.””

My heart dropped.

“James?””

Michael nodded.

I felt dizzy.

James had been my closest friend for years.

He helped build my company.

He stood beside me at my wedding.

He gave a speech at my wife's funeral.

Why would he be involved?

“What was he doing there?””

Michael looked at the floor.

“He was trying to convince your wife not to expose him.””

“Expose him for what?””

Michael hesitated.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“For stealing from your company.””

I stared at her.

“What?””

“She found the financial records.””

My mind went back to the argument with my wife.

The hidden bills.

The missing money.

The things I thought she was hiding.

She wasn't hiding something from me.

She was protecting me.

I felt sick.

“She tried to tell me.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Yes.””

“But I left.””

Nobody said anything.

Because everyone knew.

I left.

And while I was gone…

everything changed.

My phone suddenly buzzed.

A message.

From James.

I opened it.

One sentence.

*You should have listened to your wife.*

My hands shook.

Then another message appeared.

*Ask Vanessa why she never told you who was really driving the car.*

I looked up.

“Who was driving?””

Nobody answered.

Vanessa's face turned pale.

Michael closed his eyes.

May you like

And I realized…

there was still one secret everyone was protecting.
