Chapter 14: The Truth My Mother Hid
My mother's house looked exactly the same.
The same porch.
The same flowers.
The same welcome mat she had owned for years.
That was the hardest part.
How could a place filled with childhood memories become the place where my entire life changed?
Sophie stayed in the car with Vanessa.
I didn't want her hearing anything else.
Not this.
Not anymore.
Michael stood beside me.
“You sure you want to do this?””
I looked at the front door.
“No.””
He looked surprised.
I continued:
“But I have to.””
I knocked.
A few seconds later, the door opened.
My mother froze.
“Daniel?””
Her smile disappeared when she saw Michael behind me.
Then she knew.
“You found out.””
Those three words hurt more than anything.
Not denial.
Not confusion.
She already knew why we were there.
“Where is it?””
Her face changed.
“Where is what?””
I stepped inside.
“The recording.””
She closed her eyes.
For years, my mother had been my safe place.
Now she couldn't even look at me.
“Mom.””
My voice cracked.
“Why?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost laughed.
Everyone used those words.
Protect.
Help.
Save.
But somehow, every person who claimed to protect me left me broken.
“You let me believe I caused my wife's death.””
She cried.
“I thought the truth would destroy you.””
“It already destroyed me.””
The room went silent.
Michael looked away.
My mother sat down.
“I found the recording after the accident.””
“From where?””
“Your wife's car.””
I stared at her.
“She recorded conversations.””
My mother looked down.
“She knew James was dangerous.””
“And you hid it.””
She nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her hands shook.
“Because James threatened us.””
I frowned.
“Us?””
She looked at Michael.
Then me.
“He said if I exposed him, he would reveal what you did.””
My chest tightened.
“What I did?””
My mother looked at me.
“The night you left…”
I stopped.
Not again.
“I already know I left.””
“No.””
She shook her head.
“You don't remember everything.””
The room became cold.
“What don't I remember?””
She whispered:
“You came back.””
I stared at her.
“I know.””
“You came back angry.””
I swallowed.
“And?””
“You confronted James.””
My heartbeat increased.
“What?””
My mother continued.
“You saw him with your wife.””
The memory returned.
The rain.
The headlights.
The argument.
A man standing beside my wife's car.
I remembered pushing someone.
Not hard.
But enough.
My mother looked at me.
“You don't remember because you hit your head.””
I stepped back.
“What happened?””
She started crying.
“You and James argued.””
Michael looked shocked.
“And then?””
My mother whispered:
“Your wife stepped between you.””
The room felt like it was spinning.
“No.””
“She fell.””
My breathing stopped.
“She hit the car.””
The words cut through me.
“And James used that moment.””
I looked at her.
“What does that mean?””
“He moved the car.””
Silence.
“He made it look like she drove away alone.””
I covered my face.
All these years…
I thought I abandoned my wife.
But I had been there.
I had tried to help.
I just couldn't remember.
My mother stood slowly.
“I kept the recording because I was afraid.””
“Where is it?””
She walked toward a cabinet.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside was a small device.
The evidence.
The truth.
She handed it to me.
“I am sorry.””
I looked at her.
Then at the device.
Before I could press play…
my phone rang.
The screen showed one name.
James.
I answered.
His voice came immediately.
“You found it.””
I froze.
“How did you know?””
A pause.
Then:
“Because your mother just told me where it was.””
I looked at my mother.
Her face turned pale.
James continued:
“Daniel, you have no idea what you're about to hear.””
I gripped the device.
“What is on it?””
His voice lowered.
“The reason your wife was afraid of you.””
The call ended.
And suddenly…
May you like
I wasn't afraid of discovering the truth.
I was afraid of what it would reveal about me.
