Chapter 2: The Papers She Hid
Vanessa stood in the middle of the bridal suite, breathing heavily.
A moment ago, she had been the victim.
Now everyone could see something was wrong.
Her eyes were locked on the bag.
Not on me.
Not on Sophie.
The bag.
I slowly looked at the wedding coordinator.
“Please ask everyone to leave.””
The coordinator hesitated.
“Daniel, maybe we should handle this privately.””
“I agree.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“But my daughter stays with me.””
Sophie grabbed my hand tighter.
Guests whispered as they slowly left the room.
Some looked confused.
Some looked embarrassed.
Nobody knew what had happened behind that locked door.
Nobody except me.
And Sophie.
When the room was finally empty, I picked up Vanessa's bridal bag.
She stepped forward.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
“No.””
My voice was calm.
Too calm.
“I'm listening to my daughter now.””
Vanessa's face changed.
“You're really going to believe a six-year-old over me?””
I opened the zipper.
Inside were several folded documents.
Sophie moved closer to me.
Vanessa immediately raised her voice.
“Sophie, go outside.””
“No.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“She stays.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“You're making this worse than it needs to be.””
I pulled out the papers.
The first page made my hands stop.
It was a document with Sophie's name on it.
My daughter's name.
I looked closer.
“What is this?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“What is this?””
Her silence told me enough.
I turned the page.
It was a custody agreement.
A fake one.
A document claiming Sophie wanted Vanessa to become her legal guardian.
My stomach twisted.
“She made me sign it,” Sophie whispered.
I looked at my daughter.
“Sweetheart, what do you mean?””
Sophie's eyes filled with tears.
“She said if I loved Daddy, I had to prove I was a good girl.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“That is not what happened.””
I turned toward her.
“Then tell me what happened.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Sophie held onto my sleeve.
“She told me if I didn't sign, you would send me away.””
My entire body went numb.
I knelt in front of Sophie.
“Did she say that?””
Sophie nodded.
“She said you were tired of taking care of me.””
My chest felt like it was being crushed.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told my daughter I didn't want her?””
“No.””
“Yes, you did.””
“I was trying to help her adjust.””
“By frightening her?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“You don't understand children.””
That sentence almost made me laugh.
After everything.
She was still acting like she was the expert.
I stood up.
“I have spent six years protecting that little girl.””
“And I've spent a year trying to become part of your family.””
“No.””
I shook my head.
“You spent a year trying to control it.””
Vanessa's face hardened.
“You have no idea what you're throwing away.””
I looked at the wedding dress.
The flowers.
The decorations.
The life I thought I was building.
Then I looked at Sophie.
“I know exactly what I'm saving.””
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You think you're a hero right now?””
“No.””
I looked directly into her eyes.
“I think I'm a father.””
For the first time, she looked genuinely nervous.
But then her expression changed.
Almost like she remembered something.
“You don't know everything.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Vanessa looked toward the hallway.
Then back at me.
“There are things about Sophie you don't know.””
My protective instincts immediately kicked in.
“What are you talking about?””
She smiled slightly.
A cold smile.
“The reason she doesn't want me around.””
I stared at her.
“Because you scared her?””
“No.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Because she knows what happened the night your ex-wife died.””
The room became silent.
My heart stopped.
Nobody talked about that night.
Nobody.
Not even me.
Sophie looked confused.
“Daddy?””
I turned toward my daughter.
Vanessa whispered:
“You never told him, did you?””
My hands went cold.
Because suddenly I realized this wasn't just about a wedding.
Vanessa hadn't been trying to replace Sophie's mother.
She had been hiding something.
Something connected to the past I thought was buried.
And then my phone started ringing.
The caller ID made my blood run cold.
May you like
It was the one person I never expected to hear from again.
Sophie's old therapist.
