Chapter 11: The Passenger Who Survived

I stared at Vanessa.

“Who was driving?””

She didn't answer.

That was the moment I knew.

Whatever happened that night…

she had been carrying it alone.

“Vanessa.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I was afraid.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Sophie.

“Of losing everything.””

I stepped closer.

“You already lost me.””

She closed her eyes.

The words hurt her.

But I needed her to understand.

“You knew the truth.””

“I knew pieces.””

“Enough to tell me.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“Not enough.””

Michael looked frustrated.

“Vanessa, stop protecting him.””

I turned.

“Protecting who?””

Michael didn't answer.

I looked between them.

“You both keep saying you protected me.””

My voice rose.

“But nobody protected my daughter.””

Sophie looked down.

That broke something inside me.

I walked over and hugged her.

“I’m sorry.””

She looked up.

“For what?””

“For not seeing.””

Her little hand held my shirt.

“I knew you loved me.””

That sentence almost destroyed me.

Because despite everything…

my daughter still believed in me.

I stood.

“Tell me the truth.””

Vanessa sat down slowly.

“The passenger was James.””

The room froze.

I felt like the air had been pulled away.

“James was in the car?””

She nodded.

“Your wife found out what he did.””

“What did he do?””

“He used company money.””

I clenched my jaw.

“How much?””

“Enough to destroy everything.””

I looked at Michael.

“And you knew?””

He nodded.

“I saw James leave the car.””

My voice became cold.

“Why didn't you stop him?””

Michael looked ashamed.

“Because I didn't know what happened until it was too late.””

Vanessa continued.

“Your wife wasn't supposed to die.””

Those words made my stomach twist.

“What does that mean?””

“She was going to expose him.””

A horrible realization formed.

“The crash…”

Vanessa nodded.

“Was not an accident.””

The room became silent.

Sophie moved closer to me.

I held her hand.

“Why did nobody tell the police?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Because James threatened us.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Threatened you how?””

“He said if the truth came out, he would make sure you went to prison.””

I frowned.

“Why would I go to prison?””

Michael looked at me.

“Because he had proof that you had been drinking that night.””

My face went pale.

“I wasn't drunk.””

“I know.””

“But James had photos.””

I remembered.

The night.

The hotel.

The anger.

I remembered having one drink at the bar.

One.

But James had a way of twisting things.

“He wanted me blamed.””

Michael nodded.

“And Vanessa thought keeping quiet would protect you.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“And you let me believe my wife died because I abandoned her.””

Tears rolled down her face.

“I was wrong.””

“Yes.””

I didn't hesitate.

“You were.””

She accepted it.

No excuses.

No arguments.

Just silence.

Then my phone rang.

This time, the caller was James.

Everyone looked at me.

I answered.

“What do you want?””

James laughed softly.

“Daniel.””

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I heard your wedding didn't go as planned.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“You were watching?””

“I've been watching for years.””

My blood ran cold.

“Why?””

A pause.

Then he said:

“Because I needed to know when you finally remembered.””

I gripped the phone.

“Remembered what?””

James lowered his voice.

“The part where you came home that night…”

A pause.

“And you saw exactly who caused the crash.””

My heart stopped.

Because suddenly…

I remembered something.

A shadow.

A broken taillight.

May you like

A person standing beside my wife's car.

And it wasn't James.
