Chapter 6: The Truth Behind My Silence
I read the message three times.
Five words.
That's all it took to make my entire body go cold.
*Ask Daniel what he did.*
For years, I had carried one memory.
One terrible night.
One moment I wished I could erase.
But I never imagined someone else knew about it.
Vanessa watched me carefully.
“You never told me.””
I looked up.
“Told you what?””
She stepped closer.
“About that night.””
I felt anger rising.
“You don't get to act like you’re the victim.””
“I'm not.””
Her voice was quieter now.
“I’m saying there are things you don't remember.””
I hated that sentence.
Because it sounded like a threat.
I looked at Sophie.
She was staring at me.
Waiting.
And suddenly I realized something.
My daughter had been carrying fear for years.
Fear I never understood.
Fear someone had planted.
I knelt beside her.
“Sophie, did Vanessa ever tell you something about Daddy?””
Her eyes moved away.
That answer hurt more than words.
“Sophie.””
She whispered:
“She said you would leave me too.””
My heart broke.
“She said that?””
Sophie nodded.
“She said Mommy left because of you.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told my daughter that?””
Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.
“I was angry.””
“No.””
I stood.
“That wasn't anger.””
My voice shook.
“That was cruelty.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“You don't know what happened.””
“Then tell me.””
She looked at the floor.
“I knew your wife before you did.””
I froze.
“What?””
“We were friends.””
I stared at her.
“You never told me.””
“Because it didn't matter.””
“Then why were you at my house the night she died?””
Vanessa said nothing.
The silence was unbearable.
Then Sophie spoke.
“Mommy was crying.””
I looked down.
“What?””
Sophie stared at the floor.
“She told Vanessa to give something back.””
My mind raced.
“Give what back?””
Sophie whispered:
“The letter.””
My heart stopped.
“What letter?””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“That's enough.””
I turned toward her.
“No.””
My voice was cold.
“Not anymore.””
I walked toward the bridal bag again.
I searched through it.
Behind the papers.
Behind the hidden envelope.
I found another small compartment.
Inside was a folded letter.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
The handwriting was familiar.
My wife's handwriting.
I hadn't seen it in years.
The first line nearly made me drop it.
*Daniel, if you are reading this, something happened and I couldn't tell you myself.*
My vision blurred.
Vanessa whispered:
“Don't read that.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
Because she finally looked afraid.
Not guilty.
Afraid.
I continued reading.
*I need you to know that Vanessa has been lying to both of us.*
My breathing stopped.
I looked at Sophie.
Then back at Vanessa.
The letter continued.
*But the worst part is not what she did. It's what she knows about Daniel.*
My hands started shaking.
I turned the page.
And the next sentence destroyed me.
*The night of the accident, Daniel wasn't where he said he was.*
I couldn't move.
Because that was the one secret I had spent years burying.
The one thing I never told anyone.
Not Vanessa.
Not my family.
Not even myself.
May you like
And somehow…
my dead wife knew.
