Chapter 1: The Locked Bridal Suite

I thought the hardest moment of my wedding day would be watching my six-year-old daughter walk down the aisle without her mother beside her.

I was wrong.

The hardest moment was standing outside the bridal suite, hearing the woman I was about to marry threaten my little girl.

The chapel was only a few steps away. I could hear the soft music, the laughter of guests, the sound of people settling into their seats.

Two hundred people were waiting for me.

But I was frozen in a hallway, staring at a closed door.

Because behind it, my daughter was crying.

“Please stop.””

Sophie's voice was small.

Too small.

My entire body went cold.

“Sophie?””

I reached for the doorknob, but it was locked.

Then I heard Vanessa.

Her voice was nothing like the sweet, patient woman everyone in the chapel thought they knew.

“You need to understand something,” Vanessa whispered.

“After today, things change.””

A chill ran down my spine.

“Sophie, look at me.””

“No.””

My hand tightened around the doorknob.

“I want my daddy.””

Vanessa sighed.

“You always make everything difficult.””

I didn't think.

I slammed my shoulder into the door.

The lock broke.

The door flew open.

And the image inside destroyed everything I thought I knew.

Vanessa was standing near the mirror, her expensive wedding dress flowing across the floor.

One hand was twisted into Sophie's hair.

My daughter was crying, tears running down her face.

“Get your hands off my daughter.””

Vanessa turned.

The color drained from her face.

“Daniel?””

For one second, nobody moved.

Then Sophie pulled herself free and ran straight toward me.

“Daddy!””

I dropped to my knees and caught her.

She buried her face against my chest, shaking.

“Please don't marry her.””

My heart shattered.

I looked at her cheek.

A red mark was already appearing.

I slowly stood up, holding Sophie close.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“This isn't what it looks like.””

I stared at her.

“I watched you hit her.””

Her expression hardened.

“She was being disrespectful.””

“She is six years old.””

“You don't understand what I have to deal with.””

I almost couldn't believe the words coming out of her mouth.

“This is your explanation?””

Vanessa glanced toward the chapel.

“Daniel, there are guests waiting. Your family is here. My family is here. Everyone is expecting us.””

I looked at the woman I had planned to spend my life with.

Then I looked at my daughter.

“And none of them are going to watch me marry you.””

Her mouth opened.

“You're ending our wedding over one mistake?””

“One mistake?””

My voice shook.

“You hurt my daughter.””

“She was throwing a fit.””

“Sophie was scared of you.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed.

“You are letting a child manipulate you.””

That sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because I realized Vanessa wasn't sorry.

She was angry that she had been caught.

I looked at the wedding dress she had spent months choosing.

The perfect dress.

The perfect ceremony.

The perfect lie.

I grabbed the lace train behind her.

Vanessa looked confused.

“Daniel?””

Then I pulled.

The sound of tearing fabric echoed through the room.

Her dress ripped down the middle.

She screamed.

“What did you do?!””

The noise brought people running.

The wedding coordinator appeared first.

Then several guests.

Vanessa immediately changed.

Her tears appeared.

Her voice became fragile.

“He attacked me.””

Everyone stared.

“Someone call security!””

I looked around at all the shocked faces.

Then Sophie tugged on my jacket.

“Daddy?””

I looked down.

Her eyes were filled with fear.

“She made me do something when you were away.””

My stomach dropped.

“What?””

Sophie looked toward Vanessa's bridal bag sitting on the table.

“The papers are still inside.””

Vanessa stopped crying.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

I walked toward the bag.

Every step felt heavier.

“What papers?”” I asked.

Sophie whispered:

“The ones she told me not to show you.””

My hand reached for the zipper.

And the second my fingers touched the bag, Vanessa screamed.

“DON'T OPEN THAT!””

The entire room went silent.

May you like

Because whatever was inside that bag…

Vanessa was more afraid of it being discovered than she was of losing the wedding.
