Chapter 13: The Name Sophie Whispered
Sophie’s lips trembled.
The entire room held its breath.
I could feel her little hand shaking inside mine.
“Sweetheart,” I whispered, “you don't have to be afraid.””
But she was afraid.
Not of me.
Not anymore.
She was afraid of the memory.
The memory someone had spent years trying to bury.
“Who did you see?””
Sophie looked at the floor.
Then she looked at me.
“Grandma.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
My mother.
My own mother.
The woman who held me at my wife’s funeral.
The woman who cried with me.
The woman who told me she would help raise Sophie.
“No.””
The word came out before I could stop it.
Sophie started crying.
“I didn't want to say.””
I immediately pulled her into my arms.
“It's okay.””
But it wasn't.
Nothing about this was okay.
I looked at Michael.
He looked completely shocked.
“You never told me that.””
Sophie looked at him.
“Uncle Michael told me not to talk about it.””
Michael closed his eyes.
I felt anger burning through me.
“You knew?””
He swallowed.
“I knew she saw someone.””
“Who?””
“I didn't know it was Mom.””
I stared at him.
“You knew my daughter saw something, and you let her carry that alone?””
His face fell.
“I was scared.””
“Everyone was scared.””
I looked around the room.
“Everyone except Sophie.””
My daughter had been the bravest person in that room.
A six-year-old girl had been protecting adults from the truth.
Vanessa slowly stood.
“Daniel…”
I turned toward her.
“No.””
She stopped.
“I need answers.””
She nodded.
“You deserve them.””
I looked at Sophie.
“Tell me what happened that night.””
She wiped her tears.
“Mommy was yelling.””
“Who was she yelling at?””
“Grandma.””
I felt my chest tighten.
“What were they saying?””
Sophie looked at Vanessa.
“Mommy said she knew Grandma was helping James.””
The room went silent.
My mother.
Helping James.
The missing money.
The stolen documents.
The accident.
Suddenly, every piece started connecting.
“She knew about the money,” I whispered.
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.””
“And my mother helped him.””
“Yes.””
I stepped away.
My entire life felt like a lie.
My own family.
The people I trusted most.
“They all watched me suffer.””
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could.
My phone suddenly buzzed.
A message.
From an unknown number.
I opened it.
A photo appeared.
My mother.
Standing outside a building.
Talking to James.
The timestamp was from three days before my wedding.
Under the photo were words:
*"She knows where the original evidence is.""*
I stared at the screen.
Vanessa moved closer.
“What is it?””
I showed her.
Her face turned pale.
“She kept it.””
“Kept what?””
Vanessa whispered:
“The original recording.””
My heart started racing.
“What recording?””
She looked at me.
“The one that proves what happened that night.””
Michael stepped forward.
“Where?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Then another message arrived.
This time from the same number.
*"Your mother has something to tell you.""*
A location appeared.
A house address.
My mother's house.
I looked at Sophie.
Then at the door.
For years, I searched for answers.
I blamed myself.
I blamed the weather.
I blamed fate.
But the truth had been sitting at my family’s dinner table.
May you like
And now…
I was finally going to face it.
