Chapter 8: The Person Behind Her Plan

I stayed frozen for three seconds.

Three seconds was enough to understand something.

Vanessa wasn’t scared.

She was preparing.

I grabbed the folder and stood.

“Claire, leave.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“Please.””

She looked toward the window.

Then she understood.

Outside, Vanessa stepped out of her car.

The person beside her followed.

My heart sank.

It was Vanessa’s brother, Ryan.

I had always liked Ryan.

He was the funny uncle who brought Lily gifts.

The man who told me I was lucky to have such a good wife.

Now he was walking toward the coffee shop with Vanessa.

Detective Morgan entered through the other door.

“Mr. Carter.””

I turned.

“She’s here.””

“I know.””

Detective Morgan looked through the window.

“Stay behind me.””

The door opened.

Vanessa walked in first.

Her eyes immediately found me.

“You really thought you could hide this from me?””

I stared at her.

“Hide what?””

Her face changed.

She realized Claire had told me.

Ryan stepped forward.

“Michael, we should talk privately.””

I laughed.

“Private conversations are how we got here.””

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re making a mistake.””

“No.””

I held up the documents.

“You made one.””

Ryan looked at Vanessa.

She said nothing.

That told me everything.

“You knew,” I said.

Ryan looked away.

“Knew what?””

“That she wasn’t Lily’s mother.””

A long silence.

Then Ryan sighed.

“Yes.””

The answer hurt.

More than I expected.

“You knew?””

“She was trying to protect herself.””

I stared at him.

“Protect herself?””

“My sister had been through a lot.””

“And Lily?””

Nobody answered.

I stepped closer.

“What about protecting Lily?””

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears.

“You don’t understand.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I understand perfectly.””

She lowered her voice.

“I saved her.””

I froze.

“What?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“I was there when Lily’s mother died.””

The room became silent.

“She asked me to take care of her.””

My anger paused.

Because for one moment, I saw the woman Vanessa used to be.

The woman who had stepped into a child’s life.

Then I remembered everything else.

“You took care of her by hurting her?””

Vanessa looked down.

“I lost control.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You wanted control.””

She looked at me.

“I was afraid you would leave.””

“You were afraid of losing your life.””

Her eyes narrowed.

“And what about you?””

“What about me?””

“You were never home.””

The words hit.

Because they were partly true.

I wasn’t perfect.

I missed things.

I worked too much.

But I had never made my children afraid of me.

Detective Morgan stepped forward.

“This conversation is over.””

Vanessa looked at her.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Yes.””

Ryan suddenly spoke.

“Vanessa, stop.””

Everyone turned.

He looked exhausted.

“I told you this would happen.””

Vanessa stared at him.

“You’re taking his side?””

Ryan shook his head.

“No. I’m taking Lily’s.””

That broke something in her.

For the first time, Vanessa looked completely alone.

Then she whispered:

“She wasn’t supposed to find out.””

I frowned.

“What?””

She looked at Ryan.

“You said the papers were gone.””

Ryan’s face changed.

“What papers?””

My stomach tightened.

Vanessa realized she had said too much.

Detective Morgan noticed too.

“What papers?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan looked at me.

“Michael…”

His voice was full of regret.

“There’s something else you need to know.””

I waited.

Ryan swallowed.

“Lily’s mother didn’t just leave Vanessa guardianship.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Ryan looked at the documents in my hand.

“She left a letter.””

“A letter?””

“Yes.””

“Where is it?””

Ryan looked toward Vanessa.

“She destroyed the first one.””

The room went silent.

Then Ryan finished:

“But there was another copy.””
