Chapter 12: The Truth About Emily
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The street was quiet.
Too quiet.
Cars passed in the distance.
A dog barked somewhere nearby.
Normal sounds.
A completely abnormal moment.
I stared at Vanessa.
“Explain.””
She looked down.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””
Those words made my blood run cold.
“Didn’t mean for what to happen?””
Vanessa started crying.
“I was angry.””
I stepped back.
“Angry at Emily?””
She nodded.
“Because she trusted me with Lily.””
I felt sick.
“Why?””
“Because everyone loved her.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
“She was kind. Everyone thought she was perfect.””
Vanessa wiped her face.
“I was the one helping her. I was the one taking care of Lily. But nobody saw me.””
The confession was almost impossible to hear.
Not because it was complicated.
Because it was selfish.
“You were jealous.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
Vanessa continued.
“The day Emily died, we argued.””
“About what?””
“About Lily.””
My hands tightened.
“She said she was going to change the guardianship.””
I froze.
“Change it to who?””
Vanessa looked at me.
“You.””
The answer hit harder than expected.
“Emily wanted me to raise her?””
“No.””
Vanessa whispered.
“She wanted you to know the truth.””
I felt dizzy.
“What did you do?””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I left.””
I stared.
“You left?””
“She was sick. She had medication. She needed help.””
“And you left?””
Tears fell down her face.
“I thought she was trying to take Lily away from me.””
My voice lowered.
“You abandoned a sick woman because you were afraid.””
“Yes.””
The honesty was almost worse.
I called Detective Morgan immediately.
Vanessa didn’t stop me.
Maybe she knew the truth was finally too big to hide.
An hour later, she sat in an interview room.
I watched through the glass.
Detective Morgan sat across from her.
“What happened after the argument?””
Vanessa looked exhausted.
“I left Emily’s house.””
“Did you know she was alone?””
“Yes.””
“Did you call anyone?””
“No.””
“Did you check on her?””
“No.””
Detective Morgan paused.
“Why?””
Vanessa whispered:
“Because I thought she would call me.””
The room was silent.
“And when she didn’t?””
“I waited.””
“How long?””
Vanessa covered her face.
“Two days.””
I felt a wave of anger.
Two days.
A sick mother.
A child waiting.
And Vanessa waited.
Detective Morgan continued.
“When did you discover Emily had passed away?””
“The police came.””
“Did you tell them about the argument?””
“No.””
“Why?””
Vanessa looked through the glass.
At me.
“Because I was afraid.””
After the interview, Detective Morgan came out.
“She admitted negligence.””
I nodded.
“What happens now?””
“She’ll face consequences.””
I looked through the glass.
Vanessa sat alone.
For the first time, I didn’t see my wife.
I saw the person who had spent years choosing herself.
But then Detective Morgan said something else.
“Michael.””
I turned.
“What?””
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
She handed me a document.
“A message recovered from Emily’s old phone.””
I read it.
It was dated the night before Emily died.
The message was addressed to Vanessa.
*If anything happens to me, Michael deserves to know the truth. He deserves to know he has a daughter who loves him.*
My hands shook.
Then I saw the final line.
The line Vanessa had hidden for years.
*And Vanessa, I forgive you. But Lily deserves better than both of us.*
I looked up.
Detective Morgan was watching me.
“Michael.””
“Yes?””
“Tomorrow’s hearing will decide temporary custody.””
I nodded.
Then my phone rang.
It was my sister.
Her voice was panicked.
“Michael, you need to come home.””
My heart stopped.
“What happened?””
A long pause.
Then she whispered:
“Lily found something in her backpack.””
“What?””
“She says Vanessa gave it to her before leaving.””
I tightened my grip on the phone.
“What is it?””
May you like
My sister’s voice dropped.
“A letter.””
