Chapter 4: The Report at the Door
The woman standing outside my house introduced herself as Detective Rachel Morgan.
She didn’t look angry.
She didn’t look surprised.
She looked like someone who had seen this kind of pain before.
“Mr. Carter,” she said, holding up her badge, “we received a report regarding possible child neglect and abuse involving your daughter.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.””
Rachel’s eyes moved to her.
“Are you Vanessa Carter?””
“Yes.””
“Then I need you to let me speak with Michael first.””
Vanessa opened her mouth, but Carol interrupted.
“Let her.””
Everyone looked at Carol.
She lowered her voice.
“Stop making this about protecting yourself.””
Vanessa’s face tightened.
For years, I thought Vanessa was confident.
Now I realized it was something else.
She wasn’t confident.
She was used to controlling the room.
I stepped outside with Detective Morgan while Mason stayed inside with Carol.
The afternoon air felt strangely cold.
“Who filed the report?”” I asked.
“I can’t disclose that yet.””
I nodded.
“Was it the school?””
Rachel looked at me carefully.
“Why do you ask?””
“Because Lily started acting differently a few months ago.””
“What kind of differently?””
I swallowed.
“She stopped asking for things.””
Rachel wrote something down.
“She stopped asking?””
“For snacks. For toys. Even for hugs sometimes.””
The detective looked up.
“Did she tell you why?””
I looked back at the house.
“I thought she was just growing up.””
Rachel’s expression softened.
“That’s a common thing parents say when they don’t know what’s happening.””
Her words weren’t cruel.
But they hurt.
Because they were true.
“I worked a lot,” I said.
“I know.””
I frowned.
“You know?””
She opened the folder in her hand.
“There have been concerns for several weeks.””
My stomach tightened.
“Several weeks?””
“Yes.””
“What concerns?””
“Teachers noticed Lily was often hungry. She would save parts of her lunch and hide them in her backpack.””
I closed my eyes.
The image of my daughter saving food like she didn’t know when she would eat again burned into my mind.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me?””
“They tried contacting the emergency contact listed at school.””
“Vanessa.””
Rachel nodded.
“She said Lily was going through a phase.””
A painful silence followed.
Then Rachel asked:
“Mr. Carter, I need to know something.””
“What?””
“Has your daughter ever been afraid of your wife?””
I didn’t answer immediately.
Because answering meant admitting something I didn’t want to face.
Finally, I whispered:
“Yes.””
Rachel closed the folder.
“Then we need to talk to Lily.””
My chest tightened.
“Can I be there?””
“You can be nearby. But she needs to feel safe enough to speak freely.””
I nodded.
When we walked back inside, Vanessa was pacing.
The moment she saw the detective, she rushed toward me.
“Michael, please tell her this is a misunderstanding.””
I looked at her.
“Is it?””
Her face changed.
For the first time, she didn’t have an answer ready.
Rachel turned to her.
“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you some questions.””
Vanessa laughed nervously.
“This is because of a recording from a child?””
“No,” Rachel replied.
“It’s because multiple concerns have been raised.””
Vanessa looked at me.
“Multiple?””
I stayed silent.
She stepped closer.
“You’re really doing this?””
My voice lowered.
“I’m protecting Lily.””
She shook her head.
“No. You’re destroying our family.””
Mason stood up from the couch.
“No.””
Everyone turned.
He looked terrified, but he kept speaking.
“You destroyed it when you made Lily scared.””
Vanessa stared at him.
“You’re choosing him over your mother?””
Mason’s eyes filled with tears.
“I’m choosing the truth.””
Nobody spoke.
Not even Vanessa.
That night, Lily sat with a child specialist while I waited outside the room.
Every minute felt like an hour.
Then the door opened.
The specialist walked out holding a notebook.
“Mr. Carter?””
I stood.
“Yes?””
She looked at me.
“Lily told us something important.””
My heart stopped.
“What?””
May you like
The woman glanced toward the closed door.
“She said this wasn’t the first time your wife hurt her.””
