Chapter 13: The Letter in Lily’s Backpack

I drove home faster than I ever had before.

Not recklessly.

Not carelessly.

Just with a fear I couldn’t explain.

Because after everything Vanessa had done, one question kept repeating in my mind.

Why would she leave Lily a letter?

When I walked through the front door, my sister was waiting.

Her face told me everything.

Something was wrong.

“Where is she?””

My sister pointed upstairs.

“In her room.””

I ran up.

Lily was sitting on the bed holding a folded piece of paper.

The moment she saw me, she looked relieved.

“Daddy.””

I sat beside her.

“What happened?””

She handed me the letter.

“Mommy gave me this.””

My heart tightened.

“When?””

“Before she left.””

I looked at the paper.

“Did she say anything?””

Lily nodded.

“She said I should give it to you when you were ready.””

The words felt strange.

Ready.

As if Vanessa knew there was no going back.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was shaky.

Different from the confident messages and cold notes I had found.

This looked like someone afraid.

*Michael,*

*I know you hate me. I know you should.*

I stopped.

My eyes moved down.

*I spent years convincing myself that what I did was because I was tired, scared, or overwhelmed. But those were excuses.*

My jaw tightened.

Lily watched my face.

I forced myself to keep reading.

*The truth is that I wanted to be needed more than I wanted to be good.*

I looked away.

Because that was the first honest thing Vanessa had ever admitted.

*Emily trusted me. She believed I would love Lily like my own. At first, I did.*

A tear fell onto the page.

*But every time Lily looked for Michael, every time she smiled when he came home, I felt like I was losing something.*

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The truth.

Not stress.

Not mistakes.

Jealousy.

*I hated that she had a connection with someone who wasn’t me.*

The room felt heavy.

Lily whispered:

“Is Mommy mad at me?””

I immediately folded the letter.

“No.””

She looked confused.

“But she doesn’t like me.””

I turned toward her.

“That’s not because of you.””

“Did I do something?””

My heart broke.

“No, sweetheart.””

I held her hands.

“You were a child who needed love.””

She looked down.

“Then why didn’t she love me?””

I didn’t have an answer.

Not one a five-year-old deserved to hear.

So I told her the truth in the only way I could.

“Sometimes adults have problems inside themselves that they don’t fix. And sometimes those problems hurt other people.””

Lily was quiet.

Then she leaned against me.

After she fell asleep, I finished the letter.

The final paragraph changed everything.

*There is something else you need to know.*

I sat up.

*The night Emily died, she left a recording.*

My heart stopped.

A recording.

*I found it afterward. I listened to it once. I couldn’t listen again.*

The next sentence made my hands shake.

*Emily knew I was jealous. She knew I was angry. But she still asked me to protect Lily.*

I turned the page.

There was a note attached.

A location.

A storage unit number.

And one final sentence.

*The truth is there. I couldn’t destroy it.*

The next morning, Detective Morgan met me at the storage facility.

Inside the unit were boxes of Emily’s belongings.

Photos.

Medical records.

And an old digital recorder.

The detective looked at me.

“Are you sure you want to hear this?””

I nodded.

“Yes.””

We pressed play.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then a woman’s voice.

Emily.

My knees almost gave out.

“Vanessa, if you’re hearing this, then something happened.””

A pause.

“I know you’re angry with me.””

Vanessa’s voice wasn’t there.

Only Emily’s.

“But I need you to understand something.””

A shaky breath.

“Lily does not belong to either of us. She belongs to herself.””

I closed my eyes.

Emily continued.

“She needs people who will love her without needing her to prove anything.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Morgan noticed another file.

“One more.””

She pressed play.

Emily’s voice returned.

This time, softer.

“Michael, if you ever hear this…”

I froze.

She knew.

“I hope you know Lily chose you long before you knew she was yours.””

My breath caught.

“She always reached for you. She always trusted you.””

The recording ended.

I stood there holding back tears.

Because after years of thinking I had failed Lily…

I realized someone had known all along that I was the person she needed.

But when we left the storage unit, Detective Morgan received a call.

She answered.

Then looked at me.

“Michael.””

“What?””

“The custody hearing has been moved.””

“Why?””

Her expression was serious.

“Because Vanessa has agreed to testify.””

I frowned.

“Against me?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

May you like

A pause.

“She wants to tell the court everything.””
