Chapter 10: The Lawyer Who Betrayed Me

I stared at the signature at the bottom of the document.

For a moment, I convinced myself I was reading it wrong.

The name blurred.

Then sharpened.

Daniel Whitmore.

My attorney.

My friend.

The man who had helped me buy my first house.

The man who sat beside me when my father died.

The man who told me, “Family is the one thing you protect no matter what.””

And now he was protecting Vanessa.

Detective Morgan watched my face.

“You know him?””

I slowly nodded.

“Too well.””

Mason stood beside me.

“What does it mean?””

I looked at him.

“It means someone else knew.””

“Knew what?””

I looked back at the courthouse doors.

“Knew what Vanessa was doing.””

The anger came differently this time.

Before, I was angry because Vanessa hurt Lily.

Now I was angry because every person around us had seen pieces of the truth and chose silence.

The next morning, I went straight to Daniel’s office.

His secretary looked surprised.

“Mr. Carter, do you have an appointment?””

“No.””

She glanced at her computer.

“He’s in a meeting.””

“I’ll wait.””

Ten minutes later, Daniel stepped out.

He smiled when he saw me.

Then he saw my expression.

The smile disappeared.

“Michael.””

I held up the document.

“What is this?””

He looked at the paper.

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But enough.

“You weren’t supposed to see that yet.””

Yet.

That single word told me everything.

“You’re representing Vanessa.””

Daniel sighed.

“Sit down.””

“No.””

He closed his office door.

“Michael, there are things you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He looked exhausted.

“I’m trying to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“By helping the person who hurt my daughter?””

His eyes dropped.

“I knew this would happen.””

“What would happen?””

“You would react emotionally.””

I stepped closer.

“Emotionally?””

My voice shook.

“My daughter was denied food.””

Daniel looked away.

“I know.””

The room went silent.

“You know?””

He swallowed.

“Yes.””

The answer felt like another betrayal.

“When did you know?””

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel.””

“Months ago.””

My chest tightened.

“Months?””

He sat down.

“Vanessa came to me because she was scared.””

“She came to you to build a case against me.””

“She came to me because she believed you were going to leave her.””

I stared at him.

“And you believed her?””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“I believed she needed help.””

“You’re a lawyer.””

“Yes.””

“You knew she was collecting evidence against me.””

“I didn’t know she was hurting Lily.””

I slammed the paper onto his desk.

“You helped her create a story where I looked like the problem.””

Daniel didn’t argue.

Because he knew.

I leaned closer.

“Did you ever ask Lily what was happening?””

Silence.

That was the answer.

I walked out before I said something I would regret.

Outside, Detective Morgan was waiting.

“I assume that didn’t go well.””

I shook my head.

“He knew.””

She nodded.

“Can we prove it?””

“I don’t know.””

She looked at the building.

“But people who hide things usually leave evidence.””

Two days later, Daniel’s assistant contacted me.

She asked to meet.

Her name was Olivia.

She looked terrified when she sat across from me.

“I shouldn’t be doing this.””

“Then why are you here?””

She placed a folder on the table.

“Because I have a daughter too.””

Inside were emails.

Hundreds of them.

Between Daniel and Vanessa.

My hands tightened as I read.

One email from Daniel said:

*We need to make Michael’s work schedule the center of the argument. The court will care about stability.*

Another said:

*Do not mention the recordings. We need to question their authenticity.*

I looked up.

“He knew.””

Olivia nodded.

“There’s more.””

She pulled out another document.

A payment record.

From Vanessa.

To Daniel.

I stared at the amount.

“This is impossible.””

Olivia whispered:

“She hired him privately before you ever asked him to represent you.””

The realization hit me.

Daniel wasn’t protecting me.

He was never on my side.

He had been preparing against me from the beginning.

My phone rang.

It was Detective Morgan.

I answered.

“What happened?””

Her voice was serious.

“We found something at Vanessa’s house.””

“What?””

“A hidden storage box.””

I stood.

“What was inside?””

A pause.

May you like

Then:

“Something that changes the entire case.””
