Chapter 2: The Hidden Recordings
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because Lily woke up crying.
Not because Vanessa kept knocking on the bedroom door asking me to talk.
I stayed awake because every time I closed my eyes, I saw my daughter reaching for a piece of bread like she was asking permission to exist.
At three in the morning, I sat on the couch with Lily asleep against my chest.
Her tiny hand was still holding my shirt.
Like she was afraid I might disappear.
The next morning, Vanessa walked into the living room wearing the same expression she used when she wanted me to feel guilty.
“You’re really going to let a child’s misunderstanding destroy our marriage?””
I looked up.
“A misunderstanding?””
She sighed.
“Michael, you know how difficult Lily can be.””
Those words hit harder than I expected.
“Difficult?””
“She throws tantrums. She exaggerates.””
I stood.
“She’s five.””
Vanessa looked away.
“You weren’t here every day.””
That was true.
And she knew it.
I had spent years believing my absence was temporary.
Now I wondered what my absence had allowed.
Mason came downstairs carrying his backpack.
He stopped when he saw me.
“Dad?””
I nodded.
“Come sit with me.””
He hesitated.
That hesitation hurt more than anything.
My stepson was afraid to talk to me.
I had missed something important.
Mason sat across from me.
“Show me the recordings.””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I wasn’t asking you.””
Her face hardened.
“Mason is just a child. He doesn’t understand consequences.””
Mason opened the phone.
“There are six videos.””
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Mason, don’t.””
He flinched.
That tiny reaction told me enough.
I reached out my hand.
“Give me the phone.””
He handed it over.
The first video was from a morning two months earlier.
The camera was pointed at the kitchen floor.
I heard Lily’s voice.
“Mommy, can I have cereal?””
Vanessa answered from somewhere off camera.
“No. You had dinner last night.””
“I’m hungry.””
“You always say that.””
The video shook.
Then Lily whispered.
“I’m really hungry.””
The recording stopped.
I felt something break inside me.
The second video was worse.
Lily was sitting on the stairs.
Vanessa’s voice came from the hallway.
“If you tell your dad I’m being mean, he’ll think you’re a problem.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked away.
“That doesn’t mean what you think it means.””
I kept watching.
Another video.
Another.
Each one showed small moments.
Not one terrible event.
Something worse.
A pattern.
A child being taught that asking for food, comfort, or help made her a burden.
When the final video ended, the room was silent.
Mason wiped his eyes.
“I tried telling you.””
I put the phone down.
“Why didn’t you tell me louder?””
His voice cracked.
“Because every time I did, Mom said she would send me to live with my dad.””
I stared at him.
“Mason…”
He shrugged.
“I thought if I stayed quiet, maybe Lily would be okay.””
I walked over and hugged him.
He stiffened at first.
Then he finally hugged me back.
“I’m sorry,” I whispered.
“For what?””
“For not seeing it.””
A car door slammed outside.
Vanessa looked toward the window.
“My mother is coming.””
I frowned.
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Because she knew.
Her mother wasn’t coming to help.
She was coming to control the story.
Ten minutes later, Vanessa’s mother, Carol, walked through the front door without knocking.
She looked at Mason holding the phone.
Then she looked at me.
“You found out.””
The words made the entire room freeze.
I stared at her.
“Found out what?””
May you like
Carol slowly closed the door behind her.
“The truth about my daughter.””
