Chapter 7: The Secret in the Courthouse
I stared at the photo on my phone until the screen went dark.
A courthouse.
Vanessa standing outside.
A message from an unknown number.
Your wife has been hiding something.
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
The room around me disappeared.
All I could think about was one question.
What else had she kept from me?
Detective Morgan noticed my expression.
“Mr. Carter?””
I handed her the phone.
She studied the picture carefully.
“Do you recognize this building?””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s the Dallas County courthouse.””
“Have you ever been there with your wife?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“Are you sure?””
The question bothered me.
Not because she was accusing me.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure about anything.
Vanessa had hidden so much while I was working.
What else could she have done?
I called the number.
No answer.
I tried again.
Straight to voicemail.
Then a message came through.
*Meet me at the coffee shop across from the courthouse. Alone.*
Detective Morgan shook her head.
“No.””
I looked at her.
“I need answers.””
“You need protection.””
“I’m not walking into a dangerous situation.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“You don’t know that.””
I looked at the photo again.
“I need to know what she’s hiding.””
After some discussion, Detective Morgan agreed to let me meet the person, but she would stay nearby.
An hour later, I sat in the corner of a small coffee shop across from the courthouse.
The smell of roasted coffee filled the air.
People laughed.
Phones rang.
Normal life continued.
Meanwhile, mine felt like it had fallen apart.
Then a woman walked in.
I recognized her immediately.
It was Vanessa’s old friend, Claire.
She sat across from me.
“You came.””
I nodded.
“You sent the message?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Claire took a deep breath.
“Because I should have done this months ago.””
I waited.
She pulled a folder from her bag.
“I worked at a legal office downtown. That’s how I knew.””
“Knew what?””
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were documents.
Court documents.
My hands tightened.
“What am I looking at?””
“Vanessa filed for custody modification.””
I frowned.
“Custody?””
“She wanted to change the custody agreement with Lily’s biological mother.””
I stared at her.
“Lily’s mother?””
Claire looked confused.
“You didn’t know?””
The silence answered her.
She slowly closed her eyes.
“Oh my God.””
“What?””
“Michael…”
Her voice softened.
“Vanessa isn’t Lily’s biological mother.””
The world stopped.
I looked at her.
“What did you say?””
Claire swallowed.
“I thought you knew.””
I stood so quickly my chair scraped against the floor.
“That’s impossible.””
Claire opened another document.
“Your daughter’s birth records show that Vanessa became her legal guardian after her mother passed away.””
I stared at the papers.
The words blurred.
My daughter.
My Lily.
The child I had raised since she was two.
And the woman I married.
She wasn’t her mother.
But she had told everyone she was.
I sat back down.
“Why would she lie?””
Claire looked away.
“Because she wanted to be seen as the perfect wife and mother.””
My jaw tightened.
“She raised Lily.””
“Yes.””
“But she abused her.””
Claire nodded.
“There’s more.””
She pulled out another document.
“This is what she filed last year.””
I read the first page.
Then my stomach turned.
Vanessa had claimed I was emotionally absent.
That my work schedule made me an unfit parent.
That Lily needed a more stable home.
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was unbelievable.
“She was building a case against me.””
Claire nodded.
“She was collecting evidence.””
“Evidence of what?””
“That you weren’t around.””
I looked out the window.
All those extra shifts.
All those nights away.
All the sacrifices I thought I was making.
She had been using them against me.
Claire leaned forward.
“There’s one more thing.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
“Vanessa wasn’t just trying to get custody.””
My chest tightened.
“What was she trying to do?””
Claire slid another paper across the table.
I read the heading.
Emergency Guardianship Petition.
My blood went cold.
“She wanted full control.””
Claire nodded.
“She wanted the court to remove you as Lily’s primary caregiver.””
I couldn’t breathe.
A woman who hurt my daughter had been trying to take her away from me.
My phone buzzed.
Detective Morgan.
*You need to leave. Now.*
I looked toward the window.
Across the street, a familiar car was parked.
Vanessa’s car.
And she wasn’t alone.
Someone was sitting in the passenger seat.
May you like
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected to be involved.
