Chapter 8: The Truth Behind the Adoption
The next morning, my house didn’t feel like home.
It felt like a crime scene.
Every picture on the wall looked different.
Every memory had a question attached.
Who was lying?
Who had been protecting Lily?
And who had been controlling everything from the shadows?
Lily sat at the kitchen table coloring quietly.
She had barely spoken since Thomas left.
I made her pancakes.
Her favorite.
But she only pushed them around her plate.
“Sweetheart?””
She looked up.
“Is he really my daddy?””
The question hurt more than anything Thomas had said.
I sat beside her.
“I don’t know everything yet.””
Her eyes filled.
“But you’re still my daddy, right?””
I didn’t hesitate.
“Yes.””
She nodded.
Then whispered:
“Good.””
Rachel stood nearby.
Watching.
Crying silently.
I wanted to forgive her.
I wanted to understand.
But there were too many secrets.
Too many missing pieces.
“Rachel.””
She looked at me.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“I need the truth.””
She nodded.
“I’ll tell you.””
We sat in the living room.
Daniel joined us with the documents spread across the table.
Rachel took a deep breath.
“When I met Lily, she was three months old.””
I listened carefully.
“Thomas was dangerous.””
“What did he do?””
Rachel looked down.
“He controlled everything.””
Her hands shook.
“He controlled where we went. Who we saw. What we spent money on.””
“And Lily?””
“He saw her as a way to continue his family name.””
Daniel frowned.
“Why didn’t you report him?””
Rachel laughed sadly.
“I tried.””
“And?””
“He had lawyers. Money. Connections.””
She looked at me.
“He always won.””
I glanced at the documents.
“Then how did she become yours?””
Rachel hesitated.
“She wasn’t legally mine.””
My heart sank.
“Rachel.””
“I know.””
She wiped her eyes.
“I was wrong.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
“Of Thomas?””
“Of losing Lily.””
I looked toward the kitchen.
“She’s not a secret.””
“I know.””
“No, Rachel. She grew up believing you were gone.””
Tears rolled down her face.
“I know.””
The pain between us sat heavy.
Then Daniel interrupted.
“Wait.””
We looked at him.
He held one document.
“This adoption record is fake.””
Rachel nodded.
“I suspected.””
“Suspected?””
She looked uncomfortable.
“When Richard and I got married, Vanessa offered to help organize the paperwork.””
I froze.
“Vanessa?””
Rachel nodded.
“She said she knew someone who could speed up the process.””
Daniel stared at the signature.
“She created this.””
My hands tightened.
“So Vanessa has been planning this for years.””
Rachel nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because she knew Thomas wanted Lily.””
“And she helped him?””
“Yes.””
The betrayal felt physical.
Like someone had punched me.
My wife.
The woman I trusted with my child.
Had been preparing to hand her over.
My phone suddenly rang.
Unknown number.
Everyone froze.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Richard.””
My blood went cold.
Thomas.
“Where is my daughter?””
I stood.
“She’s with me.””
“For now.””
The threat was obvious.
“What do you want?””
“I want what belongs to me.””
“She doesn’t belong to anyone.””
Thomas laughed.
“You still don’t understand.””
“What?””
“You think this is about custody.””
A pause.
“It isn’t.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then what is it about?””
Thomas lowered his voice.
“It’s about what Lily knows.””
I looked toward my daughter.
“What are you talking about?””
“You should ask her what happened the night Rachel disappeared.””
I froze.
“What?””
Thomas continued.
“Ask your daughter what she saw.””
The call ended.
I slowly lowered the phone.
Rachel looked terrified.
“What did he say?””
I looked at Lily.
My daughter was still coloring.
But now I noticed something.
She wasn’t drawing a house.
Or a family.
She was drawing a car.
A broken window.
And a woman standing in the road.
I walked toward her slowly.
“Lily?””
She looked up.
“Yes, Daddy?””
“Do you remember something from when Mommy disappeared?””
The crayon stopped moving.
Her small hand began shaking.
Then she whispered:
“Mommy told me never to tell you.””
My heart stopped.
“Tell me what?””
Lily looked toward Rachel.
Then toward the front door.
May you like
And whispered:
“I saw who pushed the car.””
