Chapter 10: The Hidden Truth of Lily

The police wanted to help.

The FBI wanted to investigate.

My lawyer wanted me to wait.

But all I could see was Lily’s face behind that car window.

My daughter was out there.

Scared.

Alone.

And every second I waited was another second Vanessa had control over her.

“I’m going after her.””

Daniel grabbed my arm.

“Richard, think.””

“I’ve been thinking for six years.””

My voice shook.

“I thought I was protecting my family. I thought I knew the people around me.””

I looked at the empty hallway.

“I was wrong.””

Rachel stood quietly near the stairs.

For the first time since she returned, she looked completely broken.

“She’s right.””

I looked at her.

“Who?””

Rachel swallowed.

“Lily.””

“What do you mean?””

“She needs you to come back for her.””

My anger softened.

“She needs both of us.””

Rachel looked down.

“I don’t know if she’ll ever forgive me.””

I wanted to tell her that she deserved that pain.

But I also saw a mother who had lost six years with her child.

“Then earn it.””

She looked up.

“What?””

“Don’t ask Lily to forgive you.””

I picked up my jacket.

“Show her she can trust you.””

Daniel’s phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

A few seconds later, his expression changed.

“What?””

I stepped closer.

“What happened?””

He covered the microphone.

“The license plate from the SUV was caught by a traffic camera.””

My heart jumped.

“Where?””

He gave me an address.

“An abandoned warehouse outside the city.””

Rachel immediately stood.

“That’s where Thomas used to take Lily.””

I froze.

“What?””

Rachel looked terrified.

“When he was angry, he would take her there.””

My hands curled into fists.

“He was around her before?””

Rachel nodded.

“Before you met her.””

The anger inside me almost became unbearable.

“How did he get near her?””

Rachel looked at Vanessa’s note.

“Because Vanessa helped him.””

We drove there immediately.

No police.

No waiting.

Just me, Rachel, and Daniel.

The warehouse sat at the edge of an industrial area.

Broken windows.

Rusting metal.

A place nobody would notice.

A place perfect for hiding secrets.

We entered carefully.

“Lily?””

My voice echoed.

No answer.

Then we heard something.

A small sound.

Crying.

I ran.

“LILY!””

A door opened at the end of the hallway.

Inside, my daughter sat on the floor.

Her wrists weren’t tied.

She wasn’t hurt.

But she looked terrified.

I dropped to my knees.

“Baby.””

She ran into my arms.

“Daddy!””

I held her so tightly I was afraid I would never let go.

“I’m here.””

She cried against my shoulder.

“I knew you would come.””

Behind her stood Vanessa.

And Thomas.

Vanessa looked exhausted.

Thomas looked angry.

“You shouldn’t have found this place.””

I stood slowly.

“You took my daughter.””

Thomas smiled.

“You still don’t understand.””

I stepped closer.

“I understand enough.””

“No.””

He pointed at Lily.

“You don’t know what she is.””

My eyes narrowed.

“She’s a child.””

Thomas laughed.

“That’s what Rachel told you.””

Rachel stepped forward.

“Stop.””

Thomas looked at her.

“You lied to him for years.””

“And you destroyed everyone around you.””

Thomas ignored her.

He walked toward a metal cabinet.

Then pulled out a file.

“This is the truth.””

He threw it onto the table.

I opened it.

Inside were medical records.

DNA reports.

Old photographs.

And one name repeated again and again.

Rachel’s face changed when she saw it.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She whispered:

“He found it.””

I read the document.

My hands started shaking.

The DNA report showed Lily’s biological father.

Thomas Voss.

But there was something else.

A second report.

A genetic match.

A family connection.

I looked at the final page.

Then everything went silent.

Because the name listed as Lily’s biological grandmother was impossible.

I looked at Rachel.

“How?””

She began crying.

“I didn’t know.””

Thomas smiled.

“That’s the part nobody understands.””

I looked back at the paper.

The truth was written clearly.

Lily wasn’t just connected to Thomas.

She was connected to me.

Not through blood.

Through something much darker.

Thomas leaned closer.

“Your first wife knew.””

My heart stopped.

“Rachel?””

“No.””

He smiled.

“Your family.””

I stared.

“What are you talking about?””

Thomas pointed at the report.

“Lily was never randomly placed in Rachel’s life.””

The room spun.

“She was chosen.””

I looked at Lily.

“Why?””

May you like

Thomas’s smile disappeared.

“Because your father knew exactly who she was.””
