Chapter 3: The Secret Rachel Left Behind
I didn’t sleep that night.
Not because of the accusations.
Not because of Evelyn standing in my driveway.
Because of one question that kept repeating in my head.
What had Rachel known?
I sat beside Lily’s bed until sunrise.
She slept holding my finger.
Like she was afraid that if she let go, I would disappear.
At seven in the morning, I heard footsteps behind me.
Vanessa stood in the doorway.
“You’re really listening to her?””
I looked at her.
“Who?””
“You know who.””
“Evelyn.””
“Yes.””
I stood up.
“Rachel wrote that letter.””
Vanessa’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
“You saw it?””
“You knew about it?””
Silence.
That was my answer.
“Vanessa.””
She looked away.
“I didn’t want you finding out this way.””
My heart sank.
“Finding out what?””
She walked into the room.
“Before Rachel died, she was unstable.””
I stared at her.
“Don’t.””
“I’m serious.””
“You’re blaming my dead wife?””
“I’m telling you the truth.””
“No. You’re telling me your version.””
Vanessa sat on the edge of the bed.
“Rachel was paranoid.””
“She warned me about Evelyn.””
“And she was wrong.””
“Was she?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
I grabbed my phone.
“I’m calling the police.””
Her head snapped up.
“What?””
“I have evidence that you forced our daughter to work, threatened her, hid her phone, and possibly forged legal documents.””
Her expression hardened.
“You would destroy your own family?””
I looked at Lily sleeping.
“No.””
I lowered my voice.
“I’m trying to save it.””
Vanessa stood.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.””
“Then explain.””
She opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
A few minutes later, my lawyer arrived.
I had called him while Vanessa was upstairs packing.
His name was Daniel Brooks.
He had handled my business contracts for years.
When he saw the document, his expression changed.
“Richard.””
“What?””
He looked closer.
“This signature…”
“What?””
“This isn’t just forged.””
I frowned.
“What do you mean?””
He pointed at the bottom.
“There’s a witness signature.””
I leaned closer.
A name was written there.
Vanessa’s cousin.
The same cousin who worked at the law office that handled our family documents.
Daniel looked serious.
“Someone went through a lot of effort to make this look real.””
I looked toward the stairs.
“Why?””
Before Daniel could answer, my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A woman’s trembling voice spoke.
“Richard?””
I froze.
I knew that voice.
Even after six years.
Even after hundreds of nights wishing I could hear it again.
“Rachel?””
Daniel looked at me.
The room went silent.
The voice on the phone whispered:
“I don’t have much time.””
My knees nearly gave out.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know what you think happened.””
I couldn’t speak.
“I know you think I died that night.””
My hand tightened around the phone.
“Who is this?””
A pause.
Then:
“I’m the person who has been trying to protect Lily from Vanessa.””
The walls seemed to close around me.
“No.””
“Richard, listen carefully.””
I heard crying in the background.
“She knows I’m alive.””
My blood turned cold.
“Who?””
The voice became urgent.
“Vanessa.””
The call suddenly cut off.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Richard, what happened?””
I looked toward Lily’s room.
Then toward the front door.
Because at that exact moment…
someone knocked.
May you like
Three slow knocks.
And when I opened the door, the person standing there was the one woman I never expected to see again.
