Chapter 7: The Man Who Claimed My Daughter

I had imagined meeting the man who hurt my family a thousand different ways.

In every version, I was ready.

I was angry.

I was prepared.

But nothing prepared me for the calm confidence of Thomas Voss standing in my living room, looking at Lily like she was a possession he had misplaced.

Not a child.

Not a person.

A possession.

“I’ve been waiting six years to take my daughter home.””

The words echoed through the room.

Lily immediately grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked down at her.

Her face was pale.

She wasn’t looking at Thomas.

She was looking at me.

Waiting to see if I would protect her.

I squeezed her hand.

“You’re not taking her anywhere.””

Thomas smiled slightly.

It wasn’t an angry smile.

It was worse.

It was the smile of someone who believed he had already won.

“You should be careful with promises, Richard.””

I stepped forward.

“She’s not yours.””

Thomas tilted his head.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

Rachel moved between us.

“Stay away from her.””

Thomas looked at Rachel.

For the first time, his expression changed.

Disgust.

“You still pretend you’re her mother?””

Rachel’s jaw tightened.

“She is my daughter.””

“You stole her from me.””

“No. I saved her from you.””

Thomas laughed quietly.

“Still telling that story?””

I looked at Rachel.

“What is he talking about?””

She didn’t answer.

Thomas reached into his jacket and pulled out a folder.

“I brought proof.””

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Put that away.””

Thomas looked at him.

“And you are?””

“My attorney.””

Thomas smiled.

“Then you already know this will be complicated.””

He placed the folder on the table.

Inside were legal documents.

Birth records.

Court papers.

Photos.

My stomach tightened.

Thomas pointed at one page.

“Lily was born to my family.””

Rachel’s voice was quiet.

“She was born into danger.””

Thomas ignored her.

“Her mother was unstable. She disappeared with my child.””

“That’s a lie,” Rachel said.

Thomas looked at her.

“Is it?””

Rachel went silent.

I noticed.

That scared me.

Because Rachel had answers for everything else.

But not this.

Thomas turned toward me.

“You have spent six years raising a child that was never legally yours.””

My fists tightened.

“I adopted her.””

“Did you?””

The room went still.

“What?””

Thomas smiled.

“Ask your wife.””

I looked at Vanessa.

She looked away.

My heart dropped.

“Vanessa.””

No response.

“Did I legally adopt Lily?””

She swallowed.

“Richard…”

“Answer me.””

She whispered:

“No.””

The room spun.

I looked at Lily.

My daughter.

The little girl who called me Daddy.

The little girl who ran to me when she was scared.

“No.””

Thomas stepped closer.

“She has always belonged to me.””

I moved immediately.

“Do not say that.””

He stopped.

“Why? Because it hurts?””

“She is not a thing.””

Thomas looked confused.

Like he genuinely didn’t understand.

“She is my blood.””

“And she is my daughter.””

Rachel looked at me.

I saw tears in her eyes.

Because she knew.

Blood wasn’t the thing that made someone a parent.

Love was.

Daniel picked up the documents.

“These papers need verification.””

Thomas nodded.

“Of course.””

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“Everything is ready?””

My head turned.

“Everything?””

Vanessa didn’t answer.

Thomas sighed.

“She didn’t tell you?””

I stared at my wife.

“What did you do?””

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I was trying to fix things.””

“By giving away our daughter?””

“By making sure she had security.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You mean money.””

“No.””

“You called her an asset.””

Vanessa looked away.

Thomas stepped toward the door.

“We’ll let the courts decide.””

I blocked him.

“You’re not leaving with her.””

He looked at me.

“You really think you have a choice?””

Then he lowered his voice.

“You signed the papers.””

My blood froze.

The same papers.

The fake relinquishment document.

“That was forged.””

Thomas smiled.

“Was it?””

He walked out.

But before he closed the door, he looked at Lily.

“See you soon, sweetheart.””

Lily started crying.

The moment the door shut, she collapsed into my arms.

“Daddy, don’t let him take me.””

I held her tightly.

“I won’t.””

But for the first time…

I wasn’t sure if I could keep that promise.

Because sitting on the table was the one thing I had avoided looking at.

The adoption papers.

And when Daniel opened them, he found something that made his face turn white.

“Richard…”

“What?””

He pointed at the signature.

“This isn’t Vanessa’s.””

I leaned closer.

The name at the bottom wasn’t my wife’s.

It was Rachel’s.

And next to it was a date.

A date from seven years ago.

A year before I ever met her.

Daniel whispered:

“Someone has been rewriting Lily’s entire history.””
